I bought this book after being on a wildflower walk with a local nature group. It was recommended by people on the trip as the bible and indeed its very handy. You have to get used to working with it since its driven off of knowing the plant parts/forms. Its quite a good reference though. Newcomb's guide is a great book, once you get past the initial training period. For those of us used to flipping through pictures of flowers and fruit until we think we have the right one, this book can be initially off-putting.My advice...get used to it. Newcomb's system is more efficient and more certain than flower-flipping. A good book.

I just bought Newcomb's Wildflower Guide about a month ago and so far I have found it an adequate reference in the field. This guide would be great IF more of its illustrations were in color. I mean, really, a wildflower IDENTIFICATION guide with mostly black and white pen drawings?
