Book Reviews of Newcomb's Wildflower GuideBook Review: Adapit for the South Summary: 5 Stars
I bought an old (hardcopy) edition of this in the 80s and I still use it. You can key many flowers down to a famlily or group of species (or even species). Then use your state's/region's big thumpin' botany book, internet plant atlas, or field ecologist to find the species. Botanists are dismayed that it doesn't have a dichotomous key--which means it's great. I have used it in Kentucky, Virginia, Louisiana, North Carolina, and North Florida. I carry it in my vehicle to keep it handy.
Book Review: Newcomb's Wildflower Guide Summary: 5 Stars
Based on the hardcover first edition of 1977: With this guide in my pack I've been able to identify just about every wildflower I've encountered coast to coast. After answering 5 basic questions (all easily answered by looking at the plant) you are lead to a selection of similar plants where drawings (in color or black and white)are the final step to identification. The drawings are clean and clear; much easier to use than the photographs in many plant guides
Book Review: An excellent source for the student botanist Summary: 5 Stars
The Newcomb's Guide is not the first field guide that I have ever used, but it is the one that I use most for identification of flowering plants in the Northeast. I found the key very easy to use, which results in rapid identifications. Eventhough it is not totally complete, it is an excellent guide for student botanists who want to learn about N.E. flowers with only this guide as instruction. More guides should be written in this style!
Book Review: Simple System Eases Wildflower Identification Summary: 5 Stars
The author's system allows even amateurs like me to quickly and accurately identify wildflowers. It is as simple as answering five questions which point the user to the appropriate page in the book where the flower is described and pictured. The text is great. The first sentence of each description distinguishes that plant from all others in that group. If you are looking for a wildflower guide, they do not get better than this one.
Book Review: A superb system for identifying wildflowers of the Northeast Summary: 5 Stars
Ever wonder what the name of that flower is that you see on one of your walks? Here's a book that lets anyone, regardless of botanical background, figure it out! Just answer a series of simple questions about the number of petals, the shape of the leaves, and so forth, and you are led to the page that identifies the flower. Small enough for a rucksack, take it with you on any of your nature hikes
