Book Review: A crossword dictionary that I can actually use!

I enjoy doing the Sunday Washington Post crossword puzzles - but I'm not smart enough to complete one without a dictionary!! I had this dictionary years ago but through use it finally fell apart. I misplaced its name and bought another dictionary thinking all crossword dictionaries would be pretty much the same. Well, I don't know if it is just because I started with the original one I had but I found the next one (and then the next two) I bought were confusing to use. In some cases I had to search through multiple sections of the book to fine the item for which I was searching. I decided to finally look on Amazon to see if any of the front covers "rang a bell," and there it was. The dictionary arrived, and I am back to working through all the puzzles I have saved for the past year.Book Review: For those getting started in crossword puzzles

I bought Mrs. Schaffer's "A-Z Crossword Dictionary" and I think it is probably the most used dictionary in my collection. There is no "one" crossword dictionary that will solve all of the clues. In my collection I have: "The New York Times Crossword Dictionary", "The Random House Crossword Dictionary", and "The Dell Crossword Dictionary". To also assist you in solving many crossword puzzles I recommend the "DVD & Video Guide 2004", "Proper Name Finder", and a good world atlas.Book Review: The New Comprehensive A-Z Crossword Dictionary

This is a must have for Crossword Puzzle Buffs. It has almost everything
in it in solving crossword puzzles. I only wish I had purchased the hard
back edition for I have almost worn out my paperback edition. Take it
from me, always read the reviews before purchasing. I wish I had done so.

Book Review: Great tool for the crossword puzzle fan!

I have really enjoyed this crossword puzzle dictionary. It is easy to look up words and clues and the information is pretty much up to date. I especially like the additional information in the appendices.....themes in crossword puzzles, common crossword answers, and best of all, LISTS! The lists are such things as: Presidents/Vice Presidents, Oscar/Emmy Information, MVP Players, Super Bowls, Popes, and on and on......
If you enjoy crossword puzzles and don't mind having a little help now and then, then this is a great book to reach for!!

Years ago, I bought a previous edition of this dictionary for my dad, a lifelong crossword puzzler. I chose this one only because I was poor and it was cheap. Well, I'm just about to order his fifth copy of the book (I think--I've lost count). He uses them until the pages fall out--and then it's just about time for me to get him a new one. He has others; my siblings have gotten him tons of other, fancier, more complicated dictionaries, but this is the one he uses because it's straightforward, no-fuss, and almost always has the answer.
