Book Reviews of Neverwhere: A NovelBook Review: Neverwhere! Summary: 5 Stars
Gaiman introduces us to the world of Richard Mayhew and teaches us that no good deed goes unpunished! I personally have an on going borderline obsessive love affair with the City of London. And Gaiman has expanded my vision and introduced a whole new layer of that most glorious city...the underground! And not just the Mind the Gap tube stations but all of it the tunnels of the old and forgotten parts of the city! Neverwhere is an amazing journey through the unknown and fantastical...definitely Fairy Tale worthy! I loved the characters of Door, Hunter, the marquis de Carabas, and Richard. It's a book you can't put down, it makes you wonder, it was Amazing! The more I read of Gaiman the harder it is to choose a favorite!
...note he does drop the f-bomb enough for me to and a little...ahem...here!
Book Review: Wonderful book Summary: 5 Stars
I had gone to a Neil Gaiman's book signing. Not because of this one book but because of others of his. I noticed that when his fans asked him questions it was mainly about this book. I decided I must buy it and read it.
How glad I am that I did. The story takes place in London. Not just the London we know (which is called London above in the book) but also one called London below. Which of course is underground. There a man named Richard is swept from his comfortable and boring life in London above to the more magical and dangerous London below. He meets many new and different people, goes through many perils and is on his own quest to get back to London Above. I don't want to ruin it for you from there but the one thing I can say is that I hated for this book to end. I think I could of gone on forever reading it.
Book Review: My absolute favorite Neil Gaiman book Summary: 5 Stars
Neil Gaiman is pretty much my favorite author, and this book is my favorite of his novels. I saw the BBC miniseries, and it's nice, but I think the book is better. NEVERWHERE has wonderful imagery and strong characterizations. Richard is just an ordinary guy who is too nice to walk past someone who needs help, and as a result he gets caught up in a world he doesn't understand and never knew was there. The aptly named Door returns his help as best she can. But the best thing is Gaiman's London Below, a world in which things are never as normal they first seem, and they don't seem all that normal to begin with.
This is very different from either AMERICAN GODS (which is darker) or STARDUST (which is lighter). For me it was the Goldilocks fantasy-- just right!
Book Review: Awesome, awesome book. Summary: 5 Stars
There aren't many authors who continue to put out unbelievable works over and over again. Gaiman is one of them. This book is just plain awesome. It's about a normal guy who gets unwillingly wrapped up in an adventure in a world-within-a-world that exists behind the scenes of our own reality in the subways of London. This book has it all: unwilling antihero, great GREAT characters, antagonists who are evil incarnate, magical fantasy elements, a plot that never stops or lets up, and an ending that is just fantastic. I've read 2 other books by Gaiman: Stardust and American Gods, both great books on their own. This is my favorite of the three. The worst part about this book: I can never again read it for the first time.
Buy this book.
Book Review: Mythic magic Summary: 5 Stars
This was the first Neil Gaiman novel I ever read. I picked it up in London as we were boarding the plane to fly back to Canada. I know the London Underground very well, having lived in the city off and on since 1970. What I immediately loved was the way he plays back and forth with metaphor and description. I mean, Earls Court as a real court inhabiting one of the coaches - brilliant!
This guy really knows how to bring myth to life, and by myth I don't mean something that has no contact with reality, I mean the something that underlies reality, just as the London Underground exists beneath the city.
If a genie popped out of a bottle to grant me just one wish it would be "Please teach me to write like Neil Gaiman."
