Carl Hiaasen will probably never write the Great American Novel, though he could -- but NATIVE TONGUE has its moments. Yes, Hiaasen has written some half a dozen books with the same post-John D. McDonald-Floridian environmentalist subtext, beginning with TOURIST SEASON and continuing with the extremely funny SKINNY DIP and (most recently) the unmemorable NATURE GIRL. But TONGUE is a bit more artful than the others, for several reasons -- his targets are worthy, the characters' wackiness does not completely get in the way of the story, and it lacks the violence (and slightly troubling ambivalence toward it) of TOURIST SEASON. The only eco-terrorist acts in NATIVE TONGUE are blowing up a bulldozer and incinerating a theme park -- no one gets hurt except some cartoon villains (who get hurt in unusual ways). And (speaking only for myself) there is something about Disney World's obnoxious, homogeneous dumbness that makes me want to go back to the land and live like Skink, Hiaasen's recurring character who eats roadkill and periodically blows up tourist attractions. Hiaasen's typical strengths -- outrageous comic twists, skillful juxtaposition of characters from a broad range of social classes -- are on display in NATIVE TONGUE, but his sensitivity, sense of justice, and good humor are here as well. This book will make you laugh, and a few times -- as when the heroine unexpectedly sings a Puccini aria, ending with a high note that becomes the theme park's emergency alarm -- the book's serious non-seriousness achieves greatness.
