Book Reviews of NationBook Review: Nation by Terry Pratchett Summary: 5 Stars
Nation may not be a typical Terry Pratchett book, and some people complained it was not too great, but I think they missed his point. As he wrote in his notes at the end, it does make you think. Maybe his usual side splitting story wasn't in this but think what he was trying to say.
I think he had something to say, and it was well worth reading Nation to find out what it was. Maybe those who didn't like it should read it again, and this time really read it. I would recommend this book for adults and young adults more than the young readers.
Book Review: My favorite Terry Pratchett - and that's saying something Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished this book last night and am simply amazed. The characters are complex but real, the story gripping, and the philosophy inspiring. Terry Pratchett's sublime imagery and gift of descriptive verse are on brilliant display here, and the story is not only fascinating but, well, just feels right. I know this is supposed to be for kids, but like his Discworld "young adult" books, there is plenty here for an adult to enjoy and it is not written in a childish manner. This is a departure from Discworld, but a beautiful and now-treasured one.
Book Review: Interesting, moving, different from his Discworlds Summary: 5 Stars
Terry Pratchett takes a different slant with this one. Not set on Discworld, Nation tells of the survivors of a tidal wave, culture clash, renewal, redemption. It's engrossing, and at the end, quite moving. I sat there for a while after finishing the book, just letting the emotions it provoked seep in.
Pratchett's sardonic humor only slips in towards the end, when "civilization" shows up. Otherwise, it's sincere and well paced. If you're a Terry Pratchett fan, I would *not* miss the chance to read this book if I were you!
Book Review: Nation = Perfection Summary: 5 Stars
I am a Discworld fan. I bought this book on the strength of the Pratchett name. I loved it. Maybe I just love everything the man writes but he brought me in and surrounded me with his world. I would love to live on the Disc (maybe in Lancre or on the Chalck) but I think the Nation is 2009's place to be. (At least until Unseen Academicals comes out :-).
Book Review: Possibly the best he's ever written Summary: 5 Stars
Nation is quite possibly the best book Terry Pratchett has ever written. And I've been a Terry Pratchett fan for years and years. It was thoughtful, insightful, and has that rare blend of humor and looking the world in a new way that I always enjoy in Terry Pratchett's work. But this book took it to a new level.
If you like to think and laugh and cry about the bittersweet world around you, you will enjoy this book.
