Book Reviews of NationBook Review: Nation Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this book. Of course, since it's by the BEST fantasy writer in the history of the genre, I didn't expect anything less. I've read everything of Pratchett's work that I could get my hands on, so it doesn't matter if this is considered a youth novel. hell, I'd read his grocery list...
I really liked the idea that the world of this book is as close to our world as he could make it, so you don't have to know the political history of dwarves to get into it (a la the Discworld series). But the characterization and story-building are still classic Pratchett, which makes even the unreal close to the readers' heart.
Enjoy!
Book Review: This should be required reading. Summary: 5 Stars
People who are fans of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series may be skeptical of this book, which is the first in many years to take place outside that universe.
Such fears are groundless.
This may be one of the best books Pratchett has ever written, which is a tall order indeed. Similar in many respects to the Bromiliad Trillogy, it deals with the concepts of morality, mortality, tradition, and the spoken and unspoken rules of society with flair and humor. As usual with Pratchett's books, Nation is easy to read, hilarious, and touched here and there with almost unbearable realism. Worth every penny of the startlingly low list price.
Book Review: Dashing derring-do for the young at heart. Summary: 5 Stars
Chock full of wonderfully drawn characters laced throughout with an endearing sense of whimsy. Categorized as young adult reading, this is a book for all ages - and for the ages. Not only will this fantasy entertain you but generate a significant amount of the underlying tenor of the book - thought. The author artfully creates an environment for his protagonists that necessitates the questions so many of us take for granted. Did I mention the humor? Laugh out loud situations and dialogue from start to finish - imagine Robinson Crusoe, Swiss Family Robinson and Lord of the Flies with a dash of Monty Python. Great sfuff indeed!
Book Review: Delightfully Pratchett Summary: 5 Stars
As a long time fan of Pratchett, I was looking foward to his latest book with greedy anticipation. He fed my imagination well. This is a vivid story of surviving overwhelming adversity, and determination to re-create community when home and family are a memory, and hope is all but lost. In true Pratchett form, when he draws you into a very real new world that is both astonishing and frightening, the bumps and bruises are softened with understated humor. Mau and Daphne's pain will sear your heart as they rebuild their world and grow beyond their years. A book that is perfect for any age.
Book Review: One of the Best Books I've Ever Read Summary: 5 Stars
Pratchett's "Nation" is one of the very best books I've ever read. I don't know who put the "young adult" label on it (or why they did so), but I see no reason for any such "limitation" on its intended audience. In all senses, this is a deep, engrossing, well-written, emotionally satisfying, and intellectually stimulating book. As far as I can see, everyone can read it without compromise. For Pratchett fans, be aware that this book is completely unrelated to his Discworld series and sits in its own little corner of the universe. I rate it at an Excellent 5 stars out of 5.
