Book Review: Decent case study.
Summary: 2 Stars
For what it is, a quick case study of a business app, this book is decent. The book begins with some good commentary on entities and aggregates but quickly deteriorates. The bulk of this book is a redundant discussion of implementing the model-view-viewmodel pattern illustrated with verbose and implicit C# code samples. In my opinion, this books was 50% longer than it needed to be.
As far as illustrating design patterns this book is mediocre. We do get to see a few of the GoF patterns in use though most are not mentioned by name. One gripe is the author mentions the Template pattern on several occassions but consistently refers to the primitive operations as template methods. Isn't a common vocabulary a main intent of design patterns?
This book actually left me a little disappointed in Wrox and the Programmer to Programmer series. The limited content and the technical and grammatical polish make it feel like it was written in a weekend. The P2P books have traditionally, and perhaps appropriately, used a casual writing style but this one is distractingly colloquial.
