Book Review: Still wonderful

As a book-inhaling youngster, I found this one among my mother's books and loved it. When my children were little, I kept digging through my parents' attic, looking for this one. (It would have helped if I'd been able to remember the name of it... what stuck in my head were the tangerines, gum, rubber bands, and lollipops.) Finally, when my youngest was six, Mom excavated it and I was able to read it again. Still funny, still sweet, and I still love the lollipops! What's more, my son (now 8), adores this book and still occasionally requests it for nighttime reading.
For his 7th birthday, I bought him a copy of "Three Tales of My Father's Dragon," which continues the story with two sequels. However, in my opinion neither of the sequels has quite the charm of the original. My kid doesn't agree; he likes them all.
CHapters are short and simple; plot is full of action and suspense (but nothing scary). Story is more plot-oriented than language- or character-oriented -- but that's okay when you're dealing with a kid that loves action. And as I've pointed out, even though I'm a "language lover," I enjoyed this one enough to pursue finding it, 30 years after first reading it.
Summary of My Father's Dragon
When Elmer Elevator hears about the plight of an overworked and underappreciated baby flying dragon, he stows away on a ship and travels to Wild Island to rescue the dragon.My Father's Dragon--a favorite of young readers since the 1940s and a Newbery honor book--captures the nonsensical logic of childhood in an amusingly deadpan fashion. The story begins when Elmer Elevator (the narrator's father as a boy) runs away with an old alley cat to rescue a flying baby dragon being exploited on a faraway island. With the help of two dozen pink lollipops, rubber bands, chewing gum, and a fine-toothed comb, Elmer disarms the fiercest of beasts on Wild Island. The quirky, comical adventure ends with a heroic denouement: the freeing of the dragon. Abundant black-and-white lithographs by Ruth Chrisman Gannett (the author's stepmother) add an evocative, lighthearted mood to an already enchanting story. Author Ruth Stiles Gannett 's stand-alone sequel, Elmer and the Dragon, and her third volume, The Dragons of Blueland both received starred reviews in School Library Journal and are as fresh and original as her first.
