Book Reviews of My Brother Sam Is DeadBook Review: Looking up to a Brother Summary: 4 Stars
This historical fiction book is one filled with action and adventure that will appeal to people of all ages. Collier brings these characters to life by identifying traits in them that we also see in ourselves. In this story, we follow mainly the life of one boy whose brother is fighting for the patriots, but whose parents are still loyalist. This book shows us not only the story of a young boy who longs to be respected by his older brother, but also shows us how relationships were affected by the revolutionary war.
One of the most prevalent relationship struggles that we see is between the boy's brother, Sam, and his father. This is because Sam has gone off to fight in the war that his father does not believe in. On top of that, Sam in on the side of the patriots, while his father is a loyalist. Another relationship affected was that between Tim and Sam. Tim has always looked up to Sam and that only gets stronger when he goes to war. However, after Sam's quarrel with his father, Tim begins to get frustrated with Sam, and loses some of that respect. All of these relationships, plus some smaller ones, combine to convey the overall purpose of the book.
I believe that this book is appropriate for people from all walks of life. Anyone and everyone would enjoy this marvelous piece of historical fiction. Whether you are drawn to the relationships, the arguments, the history, or the adventure, you will enjoy this book as much as any other out there. This book can appeal to any idea of entertainment. Everyone will be able to find something in this action packed drama.
The Colliers did an excellent job of incorporating the historical aspect into the dramatic novel. While not all people and events are exactly factual, the overall setting is real. The events were also made up; however, they were reality for many families. The authors address this in the end of the book. This combination of reality and fiction, blend together to make a timeless piece of work. This book is great for everyone to read. This book should be at the top of everyone's "must read" list. This book is great for everyone, and I would recommend it to anyone that wants a good book to read.
Book Review: Excellent Resource to Learn More About What War is Really Like Summary: 4 Stars
I homeschool my 9 year old son and was looking for a resource that provided a fictional yet realistic account of the Revolutionary War (to give him a break from all the dry textbook type learning we were doing about the War). This book DID NOT disappoint. Besides being an excellent story, it provided so many useful lessons about the nature of war, the effect war has on the ordinary people just trying to live their lives and the lengths people will go to when they believe in a cause. What I enjoyed and appreciated from a teaching perspective was how clearly the character struggled with what side he supported and how he felt conflicted and unsure as to what to believe in. Just when he thought he was on one side something happened that changed his mind. In the end, all he and the reader were left with is the reality and tragedy of war...and this lesson can be extracted to any war. I was worried about the heaviness of the message for my son at his age but he enjoyed it quite a bit. We read it together and he never wanted to put it down. He's an avid reader to begin with but has never read something quite on this level before. We both highly recommend this book. I will make one warning from a parental standpoint. The book does contain some foul language. Nothing too incredibly bad but my son is very clear about what bad words are and so when we came across them in the book we had to "Bleep" them out. I will say that the words used were probably appropriate for the time and used in context. But I just thought I'd mention it to parents who might be sensitive to that. Doesn't change my feelings about the book though. So glad I stumbled across it.

If you like books about War, blood and violence? This is the book for you it is historical fiction book. It takes place during the American Revolution. This story tells how War will tear families apart.
This Story talks about how War is Cruel. Sam wants to go to War to fight for his country with the Patriots and his Father is against him fighting. There all suppose to be on the Torres. Ever since Sam has gone to war they have caused a lot of arguments and fights between Father and Sam. Sam has made a bad decision to go to War because now you have caused fighting with your Family and now more work for Tim and the rest of the Family since you had left.
After Sam left Tim had to do all of the work Mom and Dad mostly depended on him for cattle and other things. Tim wants to be like his brother and fight in the American Revolution for his Country. Mom was an alcoholic and she is a depressed also Dad will not let Mom mail back her son Sam just because Dad got in a fight with Sam. To me that is not right because you do not like a person she doesn't have to like him to.
I can connect an text to self because I had an family member that has died in an War an that is my older brother Marcus I recommend this book of the family members we have lost a lot of Americans from the War because War is Cruel and it may tear families apart.
This book talks about the War back in the day and this book is good because it has a lot of info in this book.
Book Review: "My Brother Sam Is dead" Summary: 4 Stars
If you like war movies or books this might be the book for you. It talks bout how this boy named Sam wants to go to war for no reason just to fight for his country but his father doesn't want him to go because he wants his son to do good in his study's and also school, I really didn't get that part but I still need to read more it really get's interesting by the 5th threw the 8th chapter.
I'm starting to like this book because it talks about a kid who want's to do something for his life and future but his father is stopping him from doing the thing's he want's to do for him not for other people, but it really effects me because is like his father just wants the best for him but Sam just thinks other wise, his father want's the best for himself not for his son. Is just like my father he just want's the best for me but like I think he just want's the best for himself because I want to do some other thing's like play football or basketball but he just want's me to stick with one sport like my other favorite sport that I love is baseball and I get what he means but other wise then that why wouldn't want your son to go to war and be a man is just for discipline that's what I think.
Book Review: "My Brother Sam is Dead" review Summary: 4 Stars
This is a book review for "My Brother Sam Is Dead". "My Brother Sam Is Dead" is a historical fiction book. This book is written by James Lincoln Collier. This book was written in 11974, and published by Scholastic Inc.
I think the author's purpose for writing this book was to let the reader(s) know how complicated the Revolutionary War was. The Revolutionary War had as much bad as good that came out of it. I agree with this message. I agree because it is true how complicated it was, and the outcome of it.
I think the author handled the setting, characters, and the writing style the best. The setting was awesome, and made me feel as if I were there. The characters seemed real back in that time period. The writing style makes you realize the way they talked back then.
I felt that Tim was the most lifelike character in the book. The story mainly focused on Tim, Sam's brother. There wasn't any characters in the book that were unreal or phony. Some characters won't mentioned alot.
If I was the writer I would include alot more action. I would include more battle and war scenes. The book was about life more than war. I rate this book Good.
