Book Reviews of My Brother Sam Is DeadBook Review: What is your loyality? Summary: 5 Stars
This is the message that I got from reading this book. The Meeker family lived in Conneticuit, but they claimed to be siding with the British, or so it seemed. When the oldest son Sam came home from Yale, and declared he was fighting for the Patriots in the Revolution it caused all kinds of calamity in the household. Sam's father is infuriated at him for doing this, and Sam feels that his father is being unreasonable, so in a fit of anger Sam leaves school and home, and fights with the Patriots. As I read further I began to notice that Sam's father doesn't seem to be on the British side either as it just seems as though making a living, and providing for his family is his lot. This is not wrong, but in Revelation John writes the letter to the church of Laocadia, and says:" You are not hot, but you're not cold either, and I wish you were either/or, but since you're lukewarm I'll spew you out of my mouth." This is where the Meeker family lies as it seems as though there's no loyality except to self. The family would end up paying the price in a big way as Sam's father in an attempt to sell cattle is picked up by British soldiers the ones he claims to be supporting, and is taken prisoner, and put on a ship where he dies, and Sam who is accused of stealing cows for meat by the Patriots, and is sentenced to death for doing so because the Patriots are trying to convince those sitting on the fence to make a decision to join one side, or the other. Jesus makes it clear in the Gospels that anyone who isn't for him is against him. This is what this story seems to convey, and the Meekers who were devout Christians seemed to want to be lost in the crowd of those who stood by, and cheered the one who was winning. The end result with both Sam and his father dying at the hands of the sides they picked to cheer for is a rather ironic tale indeed, and the thing was they died without reconciliation, and they died for self which was a lonesome way to die, and the matriarch Meeker seemed to sense this when she came to grips with the fact that Sam wouldn't be shown mercy, and how she reacted to the younger son Tim wanted to go, and get Sam freed she would respond by saying:"Go on get yourself killed." This is what the result of living and dying for self will bring. I know that all too well as I've lived for self pretty much all my life. I never showed much passion, and what I believed in, and the result is not having any life, or zeal for life. It's not too late for me as I have breath in my body I can change this, so this is why I'm beginning to tear through all of this material to hopefully get to the point of finding my passions, my loves, my loyality, and this is what I impart to you who are living and dying for self find your passions, and loyality outside of family today because if you don't you will be forced to live with the choices others make that will affect you.
Summary of My Brother Sam Is DeadThe classic story of one family torn apart by the Revolutionary War -- now with special After Words bonus features!
All his life, Tim Meeker has looked up to his brother Sam. Sam's smart and brave -- and is now a part of the American Revolution. Not everyone in town wants to be a part of the rebellion. Most are supporters of the British -- including Tim and Sam's father. With the war soon raging, Tim know he'll have to make a choice -- between the Revolutionaries and the Redcoats . . . and between his brother and his father.
