Book Reviews of My Big Boy Potty

Book Review: one of the Best of the Bunch
Summary: 5 Stars

We actually got a bunch of potty books from the library just to see which ones our son liked best. This was one of the best, along with "Diapers are Not Forever." The book asked questions along the way and to my surprise our son started answering them almost immediately. Most telling was a passage at the beginning which went something like, "Michael wears diapers. Do you wear diapers, too?" Our son at first was answering "yes" but as our training went on and was successful, he started answering ,"no, I wear underpants." This book, along with "Diapers are Not forever" was good because it seemed to show a lot of steps clearly and in easy to read language. While not much time is spent on anatomy per se, the practical use of "pee" and "poop" and the repetition of the steps to getting there (including the nighttime diaper use) was very helpful. The final page was a "primer" to the parent about potty training.

We also looked at the Capucilli book "The Potty Book for Boys" which came with a DVD (because we love the "Biscuit" books). Our son also liked that book, and liked the movie. I found the book to be too drawn out and the movie interminable, but clearly our son did not share my opinion. But he liked the movie more than the book, and "My Big Potty Book" was requested more often than thet Capucilli book. We also looked at "Once Upon a Potty" which had the best description of anatomy, but the most irritating language for pee and poop. And it also seemed the most dated - the potty chair in it looks like a chamber pot!

"Diapers are Not Forever" and "My Big Boy Potty" were the best combination. We didn't read a lot of parenting how-to books on potty training, just the chapter in "Toddler 411" and the amusing "Potty Training Sucks" along with the last page of "My Big Boy Potty." The best advice we got was to wait until we were sure he was ready, and didn't start just because he turned a certain age (or because a grandparent "thought" we should start). We were fully trained in 3/4 weeks, but even during that time had only a few accidents, so felt good about all of those sources.

Book Review: great potty learning book
Summary: 5 Stars

We really like this book. Our son is 10 months old and we have been working on early potty training for about a month now. This book, along with his bath toys, keep him on the potty long enough to go. So far, he is peeing in the potty regularly, and we have "Michael" to thank for keeping him there long enough to figure it out. I disagree with those who say the book is too descriptive. At least for us, it exactly describes what our son does on the potty and in his day- diaper changes on the changing table, sitting on the potty with toys and books, having mommy and daddy in the bathroom with him, trying out "big boy" training pants, rocking in the chair with mommy, dumping the potty in the toilet and flushing, washing hands, etc. Sometimes we read the whole book, and other times we just let him open it up to a page he likes and we talk about it. Our son reaches for this book as soon as he sits down on the potty and starts smiling. The only thing I would take a bit of issue with is that they show Michael standing up and using the potty. At least with our early training, that is pretty far off. I am not sure if he learned it from the book or from dad, but we have had a few messy incidents where he has stood up in the bathroom and peed on the floor (or my leg!). It isn't really a drawback, but I would also point out that this book is large- about a foot high and wide- much larger than most board books. I highly recommend this book.

Book Review: This book is fabulous!
Summary: 5 Stars

My two year old son is just starting potty training. He's doing very well but I wanted a book to help explain some of the concepts in a way that he could understand. This book completely fit the bill. My son talks about Michael (the boy in the book) all the time and we read the book whenever he is on the potty. When he successfully goes potty, he says he's like Michael. Now all I have to do is ask if he wants to go potty like Michael and he happily goes. It's a very well-written book and my son just connects with it. Thank you so much Ms. Cole for writing this book and Ms. Chambliss for illustrating it. Now, if you could only write a book about Michael letting his mommy brush his teeth without resistance, we'd be all set!

Book Review: Great book for my 2 year old
Summary: 5 Stars

I decided to get my 2 year old a book about using the potty, to get him started. I got Once Upon a Potty, but it was a bit too graphic and detailed for him. He wasn't at all interested in it, and didn't seem to like it. Because he LOVES Joanna Cole's book I'm a Big Brother, I decided to try her Potty book. He LOVES it. Though he is not potty trained yet (we have not really started seriously working on that yet), he does recite the book to me now, and pretends that he is the boy in the book. i'm thrilled with how much he enjoys it and seems to relate to it. I highly recommend this book, particularly for preparing to potty-train.

Book Review: Awesome!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this book in conjunction with another well-known potty book and this one is by far the best so far. The story is easy to read and the pictures are not too explicit. My son (22 months) really gets it! The illustrations are right-on and easy to understand. My son actually knows the difference between the "potty" and the "toilet." He loves it when I read this book to him, wanting me to keep reading it over and over again. He points out pictures in the book aside from the potty and toilet. In fact, he actually tells me when he has to go! We are still working on the timing of it all...but over all, this is a great book.
