Book Review: Delicious Cozy Début

In the 1st book in the Gray Whale Inn Mystery series, we meet new Bed and Breakfast owner, Natalie "Nat" Barnes. Nat has moved from Texas to fulfill a lifelong dream of a less-stressful life on the shore of Cranberry Island, Maine. She buys the Gray Whale Inn on the island that is accessible only by boat, and begins to carve out a living for herself in the hospitality industry. Her dreams become a nightmare when resort mogul, Bernard Katz, decides to buy the property next door and build a mega-resort that threatens to destroy her business. Nat forms a committee called "Save Our Terns" hoping to not only save the endangered birds nesting on the coastline that Katz wants to develop, but also save her inn as well. When Nat finds Katz dead, she becomes an instant suspect. Not only is she considered an "outsider" by the locals, but she clearly has a lot to lose if the land deal goes through. Struggling to clear her name and save her business while running an inn and whipping up delightful goodies, Nat quickly learns that living on a small island is more complicated than she ever dreamed.
I really enjoyed this first book in the series, and look forward to more of this fresh, fun series for many years to come. It offers an innovative setting for this yummy cozy, and I like the fact that the main character does not get romantically involved with a member of law enforcement like seems to be the norm in many books of the genre. I would suggest not reading this book on an empty stomach, however, as the descriptions of the food made my mouth water. The author does include several great recipes including Wicked Blueberry Coffee Cake and Killer Cranberry Scones, and I would suggest trying the book and the recipes as they are all delightful.
The next book in the series is called "Dead and Berried". Enjoy!

She adores whipping up buttery muffins and other rich breakfast treats for her guests until Bernard Katz checks in. The overbearing land developer plans to build a resort next door where an endangered colony of black-chinned terns is nesting. Worried about the birds, the inevitable transformation of the sleepy fishing community, and her livelihood, Natalie takes a public stand against the project. But the town board sides with Katz.
