Book Reviews of Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the WorldBook Review: If you study public health or medicine, read this book! Summary: 5 StarsAs a graduate student about to finish my MPH, I read this book after being accepted into a medical mission to Haiti this coming Spring. This book was amazing, a must read for anyone thinking of going into or working currently in public health. Kidder describes Haiti and the journeys of Paul Farmer with such beauty and curiosity, the book really paints a vivid picture of the trials and tribulations of working in public health in the developing world. This book will reinforce why you are working in the field and provide you with hope and optimism that we often need when fighting the long defeat. Wonderful story, should be a required book for health/medicine students.
Book Review: Mountains Beyond Mountains...the best Summary: 5 StarsMountains Beyond Mountains is one of the best books I have ever read. It is incredibly inspiring and should be read by anyone who wonders if there is any good left in the world. I'm giving and/or recommending it to all of my friends. I can't stop thinking about it.
Book Review: Most inspiring book I've ever read Summary: 5 StarsIf you're looking for an up-lifting and possibly life-changing book, this is a must read. In my opinion, Paul Farmer will be one of the most influential persons of our generation. Beyond the story of who he is and the work that Partners in Health does, Tracy Kidder is a master story teller. This book is a must read.
Book Review: Tears of joy Summary: 5 StarsThis is the only book which has ever evoked tears of joy from me. Every time I read a page I feel inspired to do good things. This book is on my bookshelf next to Ovid's Metamorphoses, Aeschylus' Oresteia & Hesiod's Works & Days. You will be a better person after reading it.
Book Review: Reawaken the Passion for Healing Summary: 5 StarsThis book doesn't really need another review -- clearly it was well loved and respected long before I discovered it.
More to the point is that I needed to acknowledge how deeply moving and inspiring it was, making me forget I was home sick!!! It allowed my own passion for healing to be more deeply awakened and expressed in my little corner of the world, with a dream to one day share it ... who knows where.
Only rarely could someone maintain the incredible energy, constant travel, mental gymnastics, and extraverted lifestyle of Paul Farmer. But I believe most physicians and many other healers can recognize this call to our innermost core, that space where we first made a commitment to the sacrifices required to do our work with all of our heart, soul, body and mind engaged. After being buried in paperwork, politics, legislative regulation, and thousands of other forms of beauracratic and social hurdles standing in the way of daily living out the compassion we first envisioned . . . this book offers vastly more than a ray of hope . . . its a joyous solar flare.
I am humbled and inspired. Most importantly, I will never be the same after having the opportunity to almost feel, see, hear, smell and touch the textures of life in Haiti (and to a lesser extent in Lima, Peru and Russia) as if I was actually walking along side this remarkable man, a feat accomplished by the wonderful skills of the narrator -- Terry Kidder.
