Book Review: A fantastic home for "the stuff of life"

Expensive? Yes. Pretentious? Probably. Useful? Incredibly so. I use notebooks all the time to document thoughts, ideas, drawings, etc., and I've used any number of brands of these small, nicely bound notebooks. But, alas, none has quite compared to the Moleskine. The quality of the pages of this notebook is very high, and the stock is quite thick. Unlike many other brands of notebooks, ink doesn't tend to seep through to the other side with this, and the binding is also very strong, which is always a plus. Obviously, if you carry this thing around, you may appear to be quite the smug, self-important "d-bag"-- but given ultimately, I value the commitment of my ephemera to paper more than I value my money and social standing. The paper is thick and very smooth. I sketch with a heavy hand and even the heaviest marks don't make the other side of the page bumpy - excellent. No show-through for felt-tip pens either. There is bleeding with Prismacolor markers though - but those will bleed through everything. I wouldn't try watercolors.
My favorite is the binding; it will allow you to open the sketchbook almost perfectly flat, so drawing a two-page spread is a breeze. There is no valley in the middle for your pencil to get lost in.
Overall a great sketchbook! People may complain about Moleskines being the "Mac" of writing supplies (overpriced brand-name, etc.)... but this really is great quality. I'm getting my second soon.
Book Review: Really Great Notebook

This is a really great notebook! It is a little small to be called large, but the size is perfect for what I need it for. The papers are a VERY yellowish white, which doesn't bother me, but that's my opinion. I had read some reviews about the paper, and here's what I EXPECTED : I thought it would be very thick and a have a plastic-y feel, and would be hard to write on it with pencil, without it squeaking. Here's what it really is like: It is a very thick paper, and though it feels a little plastic-y, it does not squeak when I write on it, so I am satisfied. Overall, I think this is a very high quality notebook, and unless you are very picky about paper, I think you should buy it.Book Review: Great size and paper weight

This is my first moleskine journal. I purchased it to create a traveling art journal. The paper is a great weight and texture for dry media and even water color crayons. For heavier media, such as acrylic paint or medium, I usually glue two pages together and prime with gesso. The paper handles it well without warping or buckling. I love the pocket in the back and the elastic strap to help hold it closed--a must after completing several art journal pages filled with layers of collage. I'm used to journaling in larger spiral bound books, but this fits in my travel bag well and the binding makes it easy to create two-page spreads.Book Review: Moleskine Sketchbook Large

I needed a birthday gift for my former college roommate. We were art majors and I wanted to get her something for her upcoming travels that tapped into her talent and encouraged her to create. I had been researching these online (comparing prices) and found sites where people posted their molekine artwork. I was so impressed with what some people were doing, and the price was right. I loved it so much that I wish I had ordered one for myself, and plan to do so in the near future! I actually bought the watercolor version as part of a retirement gift for a teacher friend- love them!
