Book Reviews of Mixed Martial Arts: The Book of Knowledge

Book Review: Can't Argue with BJ Penn!
Summary: 5 Stars

At last, a textbook of mixed martial arts from the renowned fighter and coach PJ Penn! In this volume he presents a great number of techniques that he finds effective for himself and will work for most fighters. It is particularly strong in ground techniques, due no doubt to his grappling-based approach to the sport generally. The book is not intended to be the "last word" in MMA, or that the particular techniques drawn primarily from BJJ, Wrestling and Muay Thai presented in it are the be all and end all of the sport in its totality. However, they are those that he himself has used and tested. His game plan is to take the combat to the ground and win it there. Thus, he presents only cursory wrestling and striking techniques from the standing position, as the standing phase is not his preoccupation. His volume nicely complements Couture's wrestling-based strategy guide, with its throws. A kind of Muay-Thai for MMA volume might round off a "holy trinity" of textbooks in this genre.
Awesome book! Handy for all fans and participants in the sport!

Book Review: Shows the continued evolution of Martial Arts.
Summary: 5 Stars

I really appreciate BJ's honesty in this book. He shows what works for him but also shows how you can incorporate your own techniques. He leaves the door wide open to expand on these techniques and make them your own. He also shows the progressions which is missing from alot of the other books out there.
Though I doubt I'll ever stand in an Octagon or Cage I think this book was of great value to me and will be useful to any martial artist. BJ shares his journey through the martial arts from street fighter to professional, through wins and how to handle losses. The challenge for all of us is how to take all this knowledge we've received from our instructors and make our own expression of the techniques so that we can fluidly "converse" with another opponent.
The bottom line is it is a good book, great quality, with excellent photography and worth adding to anyone's collection.

Book Review: About time!
Summary: 5 Stars

Finally someone made a book that was all encompasing. If you train in MMA then you NEED this book. If you want to train in BJJ then you need this book. If you want to train in Muay Thai then you don't need this book. This is even a good book for learning street fighting because most of the stuff in the cage is aplicable to street fighting. The most unique aspect of this book is how it connects stand-up to take-down to submission to defense to ground and pound. It is unprecidented in combat instructional books. This book is hands down then only book you will need to buy for MMA. Now if you want BJJ I recoment Gene Simco's "The Master Texts". If you want striking, Hatmacker's Striking book.

Book Review: MMA Bible
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is everything you need to know if you want to fight in MMA or just want to understand the sport better. What makes this book so much better than other books are the images. The picture quality and angles are great. It goes step by step showing you all the different MMA moves and styles.

BJ also gives advice on how to mix up your routine while fighting. I have talked to other people who have looked at the book and the first thing that comes to mind are the images are so detailed.

MMA is the new Boxing. This book is great for the novice all the way to the advanced. Another great BJ Penn book. I have to give a big ALOHA to BJ for this book.

Book Review: Awesome MMA Book!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was certainly worth the price! It's over 300+ pgs of some of the best MMA advice out there. It starts off with a mini biograhpy of B.J. Penn then goes right into the good stuff. Penn goes thru everything from striking basics to brazilian jiujitsu wizardry in well sorted and easy to follow chapters. The pictures that he uses to illustrate the moves are also great. Most come with several angles of the moves he is demonstrating and are very easy to follow with his great insight on each and everyone! I recommend this book to any who wants to get that edge in their MMA training whether it's for competition or simply to stay one step ahead of their training partners in the gym.
