Book Reviews of Misadventures in the (213)Book Review: Funny But Exhausting Read Summary: 4 StarsI have to start my review by saying that I have read this book in 2008 and it was originally published in 1998. It is filled with pop culture references so a lot of it is dated for the current times but that's pop culture for you. In the famous words of Heidi Klum "One day you're in and the next you're out!" So please keep that in mind if you're going to read this book.
Craig is a just out of the closet screenwriter from Arizona going to L.A. to follow his dreams of success. He will be in the same town as his best friend and star of "That's Just Dandy", Dandy Rio. Dandy is a wild character that lives for the moment and feels there no such thing as bad press. Craig is her willing sidekick in her shenanigans trying to get his screenplay "Deck Games" on the big screen as well as find a meaningful relationship with a man in a city that consists of self-absorbed individuals.
This book is just pure fun. The characters are a self made L.A. dysfunctional family trying to make their way in Hollyweird with Craig as the centerpiece of the craziness. There are many situations that are out loud laughable such as Dandy trying to direct a hip hop video, stealing Koi fish from another actress' fish pond, and the risks you take when joining a money pyramid scheme. Navigating through the fake and faker of the L.A. entertainment business makes for a good backdrop in this book.
As entertaining as this book is, it's also just as exhausting keeping up with all the namedropping and antics of Craig's crew. The back of the book lists all the names of celebrities mentioned and I stopped counting at forty. It may not be a fast read because you have to take it in small doses but it is a good read, perfect for the beach.
Summary of Misadventures in the (213)Dennis Hensley's Misadventures in the (213) is like the best kind of gossip--something you might hear from a friend who heard it from a friend who knows someone who does Tori Spelling's hair--and it's just bitchy enough to be very, very funny. Aspiring screenwriter Craig Clybourn arrives in Hollywood and is soon sucked into a series of giddy escapades involving a phone book full of B-list celebrities and enough scandal to keep the most rabid "Melrose Place" fan happy (including a shocking case of watermelon abuse!) Craig's adventures were originally published as a monthly serial in Detour magazine, and the episodic structure that this lends to the book only serves to keep the laughs coming thick and fast. From AIDS dance-athons to champagne glasses bearing Heather Locklear's lipstick, Misadventures in the (213), paints a picture of life in L.A. that is both bizarre and true to life, thanks to Hensley's unique insider perspective. It's a fluffy, sugar-dusted, chocolate-dipped dessert of a novel with a cherry on the top, and if you have a sense of humor and an open mind, its charms are irresistible. --Simon Leake What Tales for the City did for San Francisco, Misadventures...does for Los Angeles in this breezy tale of a struggling screenwriter, his wacky circle of celebrity-seeking friends and their madcap attempts to make it big in the biz. Full-cast recording, Performed by: Dennis Hensley, Kathy Griffin, Rachael Harris, Jack Plotnick, Gregg Rainwater, Shane Jacobsen, Rob Nash, and Robert Abele.
