Book Reviews of Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, Book 1)Book Review: More proof that Lisa Kleypas knows how to tell a great story Summary: 5 Stars
Amelia Hathaway is used to taking care of her family. Her brother, recently awarded a viscountcy that's rumored to be cursed, has taken to drinking himself to oblivion every night in mourning of his dead fiance. Her younger sister, weakened by scarlet fever, is a constant source of worry for Amelia, who worries about her constitution and ability to ever find happiness in the weakened state. And then there are her other two sisters, both suffering from the neglect of their family's lack of funds and who Amelia hopes will one day marry rich men who will take them away from the Hathaway troubles. Amelia has no thoughts of her own wants and desires. She comes second in her duty to keep her family together, healthy, and happy.
When Mine Till Midnight begins, Amelia is once again doing her duty; she's gone to look for her wayward brother in London, and along with her Gypsy companion Merripen, she is scouring taverns and pubs for a sight of him. It is on this quest that she encounters Cam Rohan--the dark-haired Gypsy Kleypas fans will first remember from The Devil in Winter. Rohan is like no other man of Amelia's acquaintance. Yes, like Merripen, he is Gypsy, but in a different way. Cam believes in fate, ascribes to the idea that future is predestined, and grudgingly accepts his position as a Roma in a world full of gadjis (non-Gypsies).
The manager of a London gentleman's club, Cam knows how to keep his nose out of other people's business. When the prim and proper Amelia comes to him looking for word of her brother, it is Cam's first instinct to wish her luck and walk away--to not become involved. It's Amelia's Gypsy companion that intrigues him, and convinces him to help her. Before long, Cam is firmly entrenched in Hathaway affairs and finds himself become more and more enchanted with the family's matriarch. Cam decides to convince Amelia to put herself before her duty to her family, and to find happiness and love... with him.
Mine Till Midnight is further proof that Lisa Kleypas is the reigning queen of historical romance. I was a bit worried with her transition to contemporaries with Sugar Daddy (an excerpt of which is included at the end of this book), but the worries were without merit. The technique, style, and passion inherent in Kleypas's most memorable romances were all present in Mine Till Midnight.
Amelia Hathaway is your typical romance heroine. She is a lady who wants to take care of everyone, often at the expense of her own happiness. An on-the-shelf spinster, Amelia has given up on finding true love. In this manner, Mine Till Midnight offers nothing new. The saving grace of this story, what escalates it from just another historical romance, is the hero.
Cam Rohan is a dark, mysterious, brooding man who audiences can get behind and root for. He eschews the virtues of the polite society he's been living in, and remains true to his Roma ways. Though he believes it is his destiny to reconnect with his Roma tribe, and give up his material things, that all changes when he falls in love with Amelia. Immediately, she becomes his first priority--her worries become his worries. Cam makes it his job to take care of the Hathaway family, drunken viscount and all, because he loves Amelia. Heroes like this deserve to be written about, and men like Cam deserve to be appreciated--which Amelia learns to do.
Anyone who had any doubts about Kleypas's ability to alternate between the two genres (historical and contemporary) will have no concerns after reading this stellar new historical. Mine Till Midnight is just further proof that Lisa Kleypas knows how to tell great stories, regardless of the setting.
Summary of Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, Book 1)When an unexpected inheritance elevates her family to the ranks of the aristocracy, Amelia Hathaway discovers that tending to her younger sisters and wayward brother was easy compared to navigating the intricacies of the ton. Even more challenging: the attraction she feels for the tall, dark, and dangerously handsome Cam Rohan. Wealthy beyond most men's dreams, Cam has tired of society's petty restrictions and longs to return to his "uncivilized" Gypsy roots. When the delectable Amelia appeals to him for help, he intends to offer only friendship--but intentions are no match for the desire that blindsides them both. But can a man who spurns tradition be tempted into that most time-honored arrangement: marriage? Life in London society is about to get a whole lot hotter?.
