Book Review: Windows XP Freeze Fix
Summary: 5 Stars
Any hyperthreaded computer will freeze on installation of the included PC software. To fix this, go to mindstorms.lego.com, choose the "technical support" link, select support for "Lego Mindstorms", then "Robotics Invention System 2.0". At this point you should find information about a patch for the PC lock-up problem. This cost me about three hours to figure everything out. Also note that there is another patch for WindowsXP to keep the Mindstorms app window from popping up on every restart.Book Review: 16-year-old future engineering student

I have used this kit for two years as part of a summer engineering institute at The Ohio State University. It is a wonderful way to learn basic programming and it's fun also. I would recommend this product for anyone, adults included, as it can be as challenging or as simple as the user makes it. The basic ideas in the instructions are great to get started with, but I would personally recommend coming up with your own inventions and programming. This kit is definitely worth the money.Book Review: Not just for kids....

I am a software engineer who really likes thisrobotics system. Although my 16 year-old nephew is now
"too old" to play with this lego system, I am still "young
enough" at age 49. The software makes programming your robots
almost as easy as spelling words with blocks. Yes, the robots
can come apart, but if one gives some thought to making a
sturdy robot, and is careful to push all the pieces
tightly together, there should be no trouble.

The software included actually does work in Win2K environment rather nicely. USB connectivity is implemented absolutely flawlessly. No need to fiddle with IRQs and IO addresses for serial ports. Infrared transmitter also automatically distinguishes between powered and passive USB hubs and adjusts the output accordingly.
It's nice to see a polished and well designed product. You and your kids :-) will almost certainly enjoy playing and learning with it.

A friend of mine mentioned that she uses Mindstorms for intro. engineering classes at a community college. I ordered a kit for my university Robotics Club, and they love it. Within days of receiving our kit, the students in the club are explaining to me the science of each component and how it works. And they are having so much fun I can't get them out of the club room. And yes, the software definitely runs under Win2000 on our systems.
