Book Reviews of Might As Well Laugh About It Now

Book Review: Lightweight Uplifting Reading
Summary: 5 Stars

Seeking to improve my negative mood I checked the book out of the library. My expectations were not inflated, after all this book is written by a light entertainer, not a well-known philosopher. I was not unhappy with the book. I found it very enjoyable and life affirming, which I welcomed at this time when so little seems positive.

If you are looking for scandal, look elsewhere. She does not discuss her children's issues, which I think is admirable -- in the future, the children can tell their stories if they wish. And, her divorces are mentioned only in passing, so there are no new details, although I didn't realize she was the breadwinner in her second marriage. She made a comment about how he didn't want to go on the road with her and be Mr. Osmond, but he also didn't provide for the family so she could stay home and be Mrs. whatever his name is.

The challenge she presents to the reader is to seek happiness instead of misery. Perhaps it is a bit simplistic, but again, so much in our world appears cynical and jaded, it is refreshing to read stories about viewing problems as challenges and attempting to overcome them rather than wallowing.

It is all about what is most valuable. Her mother, Olive, told Marie a story how as a child, she broke a lovely china dish her mother cherished. Olive went to her mother crying, explained what happened, and asked for forgiveness. She looked at Olive, wiped away her tears and said -- it's only sand. To me this is the thread that runs through the entire book. People are more important than things.

I wasn't expecting a tell-all book. I was hoping for a positive message and I got one. Did I laugh at everything Marie found amusing? No, but I did laugh, and I even teared-up a couple of times. The book is well written and a quick read. I enjoyed the organization of the book -- each chapter is another story without a time-line, so rather than plow through her life from beginning to present-day, the reader is given assorted tales that were of value to her -- caused her to re-evaluate life and how to attempt to live happily.

She explains a great deal of the values she was raised with and how she finds stength and solace in difficult times by falling back on those beliefs. I didn't feel it was too heavily Mormon or religious. People use God for strength, and I respect their choice even if it is different than my own. When God is referenced in stories to explain how she found her way through problems I did not find it intrusive. There was no heavy-handed religious theme, rather, like the title states, you might as well laugh about it now, because eventually you will.

Summary of Might As Well Laugh About It Now

Recollections, wisdom, and advice from the beloved entertainer, American icon, mother of eight children, and New York Times bestselling author.

When the Donny and Marie show ended its award-winning run on ABC in 1979, 19-year-old Marie was ready to leave the stage lights for a secretary?s life?she had prepared to say ?goodbye? to fleeting fame by studying shorthand and typing! Clearly, life took a different turn.

Now, decades later and still a beloved superstar, Marie opens the door to her thoughts on many of her milestones and missteps, both the public and the personal. In a life brimming with a mixture of charm and chaos, blessings and hilarious bungles, victory and vulnerability, Marie recounts for her ?family of fans? her greatest successes as well as her most crushing disappointments, career pressures and expectations, marriage and divorce, depression, weight issues, tough choices, honors and awards, and the incredible joys and challenges of raising children. Through it all, Marie has bounced back time and again with unstoppable enthusiasm, resilience, and an unbeatably healthy and positive outlook on life.

In Might as Well Laugh About It Now, she imparts her insights on surviving all of life?s roadblocks and detours in a collection of friendly musings and heartening advice about learning to survive? and moving forward?with humor and optimism.
