Book Reviews of Midnight Magic

Book Review: Illusions of the Castello
Summary: 5 Stars

"Midnight Magic", by Avi is a great book where Fabrizio, a servant to the ex-magician Mangus finds himself along with his master raped up in a conspiracy in the darkness of the Castello. This book is realistic fiction because it of course is not true, but it could happen. Fabrizio , the main character comes to Castello with his master thinking he and Mangus will die for Mangus' practices of magic. Instead, they end up being asked for help from none other then the king himself. The king needs help because his daughter, Teresina is haunted by a ghost! When Teresina first tells them what she saw, Fabrizio believes her and sees the ghost himself while wondering throuh the "utter darkness" of the Castello. Avi's books always strike me as being a fun and exciting adventure like the book the "Fighting Ground" or "Something Upstairs". Avi made this book really good though because he made it so people of all ages can read it and like it. This adventure takes place in the Castello in Pergamontio in the year 1491 AD. The theme of this book is that things are not always as they seem. The book can be compared to other Avi books because they make you wonder what is coming next like in the "Fighting Ground" you wonder how Jonathan is going to escape his demise. In conclusion, this book is a great book to read and I highly recomend it to anyone who likes stories about mysteries and conspiracies.

Summary of Midnight Magic

Reintroducing a magical, bestselling medieval mystery from a Newbery-winning author! The release coincides with Avi's exciting new companion to this book, MURDER AT MIDNIGHT.

Night after night, a ghost appears in the royal castle of Pergamontio, terrifying the princess. Mangus the Magician doesn't believe in ghosts, but that doesn't stop him from being charged with finding this one. The King demands that Mangus free his daughter from the torment of the ghost. . . otherwise, the magician will pay with his life. Mangus's only hope is his faithful, street-smart servant boy, Fabrizio, who must solve the mystery of the ghost using logic and reason -- and a bit of magic of his own.

A nervous king, an exasperatingly playful princess, a diabolical count, an oddly ubiquitous kitchen boy, a magician who doesn't believe in magic, and a servant who knows far too much for his own good. When this motley crew embarks on a medieval ghost hunt, destiny throws plenty of twists and turns their way.

Fabrizio, meddlesome but loyal servant of Mangus the ex-magician, feels horribly guilty. Though forbidden to do so, he secretly continues to practice sleights of hand and metaphysics. Casting his tarot cards one stormy night, Fabrizio fears he has unleashed terrible powers that will determine his master's fate. Sure enough, moments later, Mangus and Fabrizio are summoned to the court of the king, who expects Mangus to use his recently outlawed mystical ability to rid his daughter of a ghost that haunts her. The plot is soon thick as oatmeal, with threats of death or promises of reward behind every hidden corner.

This thrilling tale of intrigue and mystery could be written by none other than Avi. Versatile author of over three dozen books for young people in many genres, including the Newbery Honor historical novel The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Avi creates compelling adventure that very few can resist.
