Book Review: Book Niumber Two from Mickey Baker

This is the second book Mickie Baker wrote on jazz guitar. If you've worked through the first book you'd be ready for this follow on book that goes into the more sophisicated chords (more difficult chords?) and pushes you on into the higher realms of jazz solo guitar. Not a book to dig into until you've pretty much worked your way through Book One, which Mickey felt would take you a year at two hours a day. Having said that it's refreshing to come across a book that doesn't duck the issue of hard practice and what it takes to learn. If you've read "This is Your Brain On Music" by Daniel Levitin, you'll know research shows it takes 10,000 hours to get good at pretty much anything worthwhile. So 2 hours a day is 730 hours a year - so at that rate you'll become Joe Pass or Herb Ellis in about 13 years! But at least you won't be toiling under the impression you can do it like the 'X Factor' in a few weeks, luck and public adoration. Of course if you are at a Music College and banging away at practice for 10 hours a day you'll be up there in less than three years - which kind of explains why people go to Music College and get so good. I gave this book's preceeding Book One to a student heading for such an establishment and he said it was one of the best books he worked on. Considering what studenets get to work on during a full time three year course on jazz guitar that probaly says all you need to know. Book One and Two are probably up there with the best books you can buy. A bargain considering what you'd be like after 1400 hours working at them.
