Book Reviews of Michael Jackson: The Magic and the Madness

Book Review: Raw & Revealing study of Michael Jackson
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great read. I notice people couldn't keep their hands off this book wherever I went with it! Author goes deeply into the roots of Michael Jackson's beginnings, slowly weaving his story in such a way that you are able to identify situations and images to film footage and photos of Michael you've seen in public. There's enough information in this loaded book that you will be able to come to your own insights here.

The fact is, people who have suffered child abuse do not have to go through life damaged. I think that's the point of Taraborrelli's attempts. He shows how Michael Jackson had many choices along the way, and chose those which best served his self-interest.

I appreciate how Taraborrelli simply reported behaviors and actions without getting too much of his personal views in line. However I can understand the author being perplexed at times, especially once we get into Michael's life as a man.

Outside the shameless self-promotion the Jacksons have used for many years, I feel Michael was very much into building a myth around himself with fallacy, fantasy and lies. His friendship with Liz Taylor for example, was all about the drama! From what Taraborrelli describes, Jackson was coached from the time he was a kid to fudge the truth to the public. He was also led to believe he was entitled to do so!

This book definitely took on a different tone for me once I started reading about the Jordie Chandler case. I felt sick to my stomach. I had nightmares that night.

Personally, I will say I have learned so much from the life of Michael Jackson. From his music, I began to understand what prejudice and racism really are, and how these things are perpetuated through ignorance and stupidity. For that I'm grateful! But I am also conflicted and sad! Because I believe Michael Jackson made stupid choices - in that it seems he did whatever he wanted, and acted as if he was above the law. He had a strong resistance to getting professional psychological help, when he had all the money and resources to do so.

Summary of Michael Jackson: The Magic and the Madness

So much has now been said and written about the life and career of Michael Jackson that it has become almost impossible to disentangle the man from the myth. Recent revelations are only the latest instalments of a saga that began decades ago. This book is the fruit of over 30 years of research and hundreds of exclusive interviews with a remarkable level of access to the very closest circles of the Jackson family - including Michael himself. Cutting through tabloid rumours, J. Randy Taraborrelli traces the real story behind the Michael Jackson we see and hear today, from his drilling as a child star through the blooming of his talent to his ever-changing personal appearance and bizarre publicity stunts. This major biography includes the behind-the-scenes story to many of the landmarks in Jackson's life: his legal and commercial battles, his marriages to Lisa Marie Presley and Debbie Rowe, his passions and addictions, his children. Objective and revealing, it carries the hallmarks of all of Taraborrelli's best-sellers: impeccable research, brilliant storytelling and definitive documentation.
