I'm 39 and I just started playing the fiddle/violin a few months ago using the Suzuki method. I got through the first book/cd of Suzuki, but became tired with playing the same style of music as every little kid in America and wanted something more entertaining to play. This book is a gem! The songs are relatively easy to learn and fun to play. Many are song's I've heard before, but never knew their names. Brian has a few of his own tunes in there as well, and they are great! I especially like "Swampwalk"...funny name, but an awesome tune and not too difficult to play! "Ragtime Annie" is in there too...that's one of my favorites as well. So many good songs!!!
This book is a great alternative to the boring classical tunes in Suzuki, and unlike Suzuki, you have to learn to read the notes instead of looking at the numbers on the tops of the notes to play the music. My "note reading while playing" skills have dramatically improved since learning these tunes, and as a result it's easier to play the Minuet's in the Suzuki book.
This book came with a DVD as well, which helps a lot with learning to bow properly "fiddle style" and for playing the tricky parts of some of the songs.
I only wish Brian would create a third book for the slightly more advanced.
Buy this book if you want to learn to play the fiddle, you will not regret it!!!
