Book Review: Great Beginner Book - Get the DVD

I got my fiddle less than a week ago. I never played the fiddle before, but I could read music. The day after my fiddle arrived, I bought a beginner violin book and this book with the DVD. I spent about a day with the beginner violin book to learn where to put my fingers for the notes, then watched the fiddle DVD. I definitely recommend getting the DVD with this book.
The DVD demonstrates fingering and bowing techniques. The author then demonstrates how to play the songs in the book, with a short discussion after each song with tips on how to play better. I have only played the first four songs (ok, played might be used a little loosely). I have played the first three with the CD accompanyment, which is a lot of fun (and much harder since it plays pretty fast). I love the fact that I am playing some fun fiddle tunes the first week, instead of boring exercises, although, I do some of those too.
I read online that when the author teaches from this book, it usually takes 4-8 months to get through the material. So I should be busy for a while. I feel that I am learning a lot about how to play the fiddle without taking expensive lessons. Here's hoping a 46 year old can learn to play respectably after lots of practice.
