Book Review: Very complete, new approach

Marilynn Mair has written a complete mandolin learning system especially valuable for those of us who want to play more than bluegrass. The book starts with the usual "this is the mandolin" and progresses rapidly. The first thing I noticed is that she introduces the use of four fingers in the first position (left hand) on each pair of strings right away. After the intro & 24 pages of basics the book progresses to left hand technique. Probably the most differentiating element is the frequency of exercises; the book is rich with exercises in different keys to encourage the student to practice one technique or another. The exercises seem to be classical or baroque. Here is a quote from page 75 (less than a third into the book).
"Now that you've learned all the notes on the bottom half of the neck, it's time to tackle the top half. Playing in positions can be disorienting at first. "B" isn't simply a note played by the first finger on the 2nd fret of the A string. It is still the note read on the middle line of the staff, but its position on the fingerboard has become "unstuck" and you can play it in 3 different spots on the neck..."
I highly recommend this book for serious students of the mandolin.
