Book Review: Excellent book for learning a new instrument!

I have to say that I am extremely pleased to have bought this book. I've just started playing hammered dulcimer seriously, and this book was just what I needed. The DVD was very helpful... it helps to see just how the instructor is holding the hammers, how she positions herself at the dulcimer and seeing the patterns she introduces you to. It also is great to have the DVD because once you learn a song, you can play along with her! Very helpful. Although I was already familiar with musical notation (I play other instruments), I think that Ms. McNeil gives a lot of info about the basics for those of you who don't already have that experience. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn to play hammer dulcimer.

Another great beginner's book from Madeline MacNeil, explaining every aspect of playing the hammered dulcimer. From detailed discussions on dulcimer layout, hammers, tuning, and stands to extensive performance notes on every tune-this book provides a wealth of information for all students of the hammered dulcimer. From Oh Suzanna to Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Madeline shows the novice dulcimer player how to "map your way through" a new piece of music, finding clear, musical directions through what at first must seem like a maze of strings. All tunes are in standard notation. The book's 87 pages are illustrated with photos as well as quaint woodcuts, engravings, and pen and ink drawings.
