Book Reviews of Mel Bay The Mike Marshall CollectionBook Review: Get Mike's albums and invest some time to get into the groove Summary: 4 Stars
Mandolin players are very familiar with the nimble-[...] Mike Marshall and the creative insight he conveys on his 1924 Gibson Lloyd Loar F-5 mandolin. He joined David Grisman's Quintet as a 19-year-old in 1979 and spent three years performing and recording with Dawg. Mike picks with acoustic wizards Tony Rice, Mark O' Connor, Stephane Grappelli, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Darol Anger, Joshua Bell, Sam Bush, Alison Brown, Tim O'Brien, Chris Thile, Hamilton de Holanda, and Jovino Santos Neto. Innovative groups like Montreux, Modern Mandolin Quartet, New Grange, Psychograss, and Choro Famoso had his consummate stamp all over them. The latter two still perform today. During his three decades of sharing ideas with accomplished musicians in many genres, the versatile and talented man has composed some unique pieces. The eleven in this book barely scratch the surface, but they are certainly ingenious and meant for more advanced players. We thank multi-instrumentalist Matt Flinner for transcribing them into notation and tab. I am amazed that the players who originally recorded these heady tunes had to learn them by ear. They are a difficult workout.
There are examples of his bluegrass, swing, Latin and jazz compositions. There are four imaginative ground-breaking pieces from his influential 1984 "Gator Strut" album on the Rounder Records label. Those include Dance of the Planktons, Scotch & Swing, Wake Up, and We Three. It's imperative to have his albums to get a feel and understanding for the technically intricate material. "Child's Play" is a multi-part selection from his 1997 album with Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck entitled "Uncommon Ritual." In 1998, Mike wrote and recorded with Kaila Flexer. "Grab the Gutter" is a fairly fast fiddle tune whose third part has five flats in the key signature. I played along with the pieces from Mike's 2000 and 2002 releases (with Darol Anger) on the Compass Records labe1, "Brand New Can" and "At Home and on the Range." The former album also has Derek Jones (bass), Aaron Johnston (drums, percussion), and others. The latter album was recorded live by the duo. The songs include Big Man from Syracuse, Emu's Blues, Hot Nickels, Shoot the Moon, and Zakir. "Big Man from Syracuse" is a tribute to Tony Trischka. One will need to invest some time to get into the groove, but making the effort will allow you to get into Mike's head and then explore new ideas of your own. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
Summary of Mel Bay The Mike Marshall CollectionIn thirty years of playing in bands and sharing musical ideas and insights with some of the top musicians in his field, Mike Marshall has enjoyed an amazing opportunity to compose music for some incredible players. The individual pieces in this book reflect a desire to create something he felt would fit the musical situation at hand: the players, the instrumentation, the music that they were interested in exploring, and their collective goals and dreams. In most cases, these tunes where learned by ear and those who played them never saw charts like these. Multi-instrumentalist Matt Flinner took on the task of transcribing Mike s music into notation and tab.
