Book Review: Great intro for fingerstyle guitar!

This book requires a very basic knowledge of tuning and playing a guitar. No instructions are given for "learning" how to play a guitar. But once you have the basics down, the instructions and tabs are very easy enough to work through. Lisle has 2 or 3 levels of fingerstyle difficulty (beginner, intermediate, advanced) within each song, so once you have the easiest version down, you can grow into the next level. He uses standard EADGBE tuning, but has a couple of alternate tunings for a few songs, too. The CD is excellent to help with learning the songs, and it's just plain great to listen to! I was only a chord player (very much a beginner!) before this, but this has been a great step into fingerstyle playing. Songs: The Bantry Girls Lament, Dingle Regatta, The Banks of the Suir, The Doon, Father Kelly's Jig, Lanigan's Ball, The Liverpool Hornpipe, Merrily Kiss the Quaker, O Danny Boy, Red is the Rose, Star of the County Down, Wellington's Advance. These favorite Irish tunes have been arranged in sections of varying difficulty to provide material for beginning to advanced students. The first section of each arrangement is the easiest to play, with one or two more advanced sections following. Beginning students should be able to play the first section of these arrangements to produce a satisfying fingerstyle solo, while advanced players should be capable of playing the complete arrangement. This collection offers something to satisfy guitarists at all levels and yet challenge them at the same time. Written in notation and tablature with two tunes in dropped-D tuning, one with the A and E strings dropped to G and D respectively, and all other selections in standard tuning.Instruments & Performers Books
