Book Reviews of Me on the Map (Dragonfly Books)

Book Review: Cute Book, helps kids put the world in perspective
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this book. It helps kids relate the reality of their world to the world as a whole, It also helps them understand maps, which are really fairly abstract. It starts with a picture of a little girl in her room, and, on the facing page, her drawing of a "map of my room". Then it shows her house, and her "map of my house". Then the street, with the house on it, then the town, with the street on it, etc. The pictures zoom all the way out to a view of the Earth from space. My daughter loves it, and has drawn "maps" of her room, our house, etc. like those in the book

Book Review: maps and more!
Summary: 5 Stars

Excellent book! Not only it teaches about maps (from the map of your room to the map of the world) and geography but it is also excellent for teaching about
* sequences and patterns (each page follows the same template, expanding from the room to the world)
* spacial rotation and visualization (a map is a view from above)
* abstract represntation (a map is a schematic view, a model, of the objects it represents)
* permancence, presistence, and the transient nature of objects and their location (what should be on the map? - toys, books, socks?)

Book Review: Great book!
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought these books for our two 4 year old grandsons who both moved to new homes in new cities/states this past year. They are really enjoying them along with the puzzle map we sent them. They really only work well, though, is the parents or some other adult beomes involved in reading to them and helping them understand and see where they are on the map. My son and daughter and their spouses are all having great fun with this.

Book Review: Explains Tricky Concepts
Summary: 5 Stars

My daughter is six years old, and it's tough to explain some of the more complex concepts like time and space. This series of books does a great job using colorful illustrations and text that's a lot easier to understand than anything I could come up with myself! Besides, I am a map and globe lover, so this book especially keeps our attention. I also recommend Sweeney's other books, including the one about Time.

Book Review: Great beginning map placement for kids
Summary: 5 Stars

I homeschool and this is an excellent book for teaching elementary school kids their "place" on the map. It starts with a girl mapping her room and extends all the way to her place on the globe and back again. An excellent teaching tool for putting things in perspective! Not enough words to make this a bedtime book, but enough to cause interaction and learning.
