Book Reviews of Me and Mr. Darcy: A Novel

Book Review: Will the real Mr. Darcy please stand up?
Summary: 5 Stars

I am incredibly glad that I didn't read the reviews here on Amazon before reading the book myself; it might have spoiled the whole experience for me. I am very disappointed in the Austenphiles who have come here dissing this book. I *loved* it. Plain and simple. I read it in a matter of two days. It was *that* engaging for me.

First off, the title of the book is "Me & Mr. Darcy." As fans of the primary source, we have this picture in our heads, and assumption of how Darcy behaves, acts, thinks and feels. But for Emily Albright (my fellow bookstore ninja), "her" Darcy is presented and played out the way she imagined him to be in her drunken/drugged stupor, a product of Regency England plucked out of its natural environs into present day England. The idea that Mr. Darcy has become a catch-all term to be the ideal mate for Austenphiles enchanted me as I read the story. But he's just that. An ideal.

And that was the implication as I read the book. If Mr. Darcy were real, he would not survive in OUR time. Therefore we should not compare our future mates to him and use him as a crutch when picking and choosing our partners, or trying to beg off going on trips with your best friend because of him. He is definitely a representation of the past, and should be left there.

Emily was very much a woman of our time, jumping to conclusions, imagining problems that weren't really there, romanticizing this ideal of Mr. Darcy, a not so positive relationship with her family, and so on. I will concede that half the conversation in Emily's voice would never pass muster in America, and it shows, but if Ms. Potter ever wants to write another book from an American female's perspective, she can give me a call.

You cannot begin to read this book with a hardcore Austenphile perspective. Obviously when trading off such a beloved piece of literature, Austenphiles will assume and demand a certain caliber. But it is 2008 (2007 when the book was published). This is simply one woman's interpretation of our beloved P&P, and should be enjoyed with that in mind.

If you want The Real Mr. Darcy to please stand up, pick up your copy of P&P. Within that book, your Mr. Darcy will never change.

Summary of Me and Mr. Darcy: A Novel

Dreams come true in this hilarious, feel-good fairy tale about life, love, and dating literature?s most eligible bachelor!

After a string of disastrous dates, Emily Albright decides she?s had it with modern-day love and would much rather curl up with Pride and Prejudice and spend her time with Mr. Darcy, the dashing, honorable, and passionate hero of Jane Austen?s classic. So when her best friend suggests a wild week of margaritas and men in Mexico with the girls, Emily abruptly flees to England on a guided tour of Jane Austen country instead. Far from inspiring romance, the company aboard the bus consists of a gaggle of little old ladies and one single man, Spike Hargreaves, a foul-tempered journalist writing an article on why the fictional Mr. Darcy has earned the title of Man Most Women Would Love to Date.

The last thing Emily expects to find on her excursion is a broodingly handsome man striding across a field, his damp shirt clinging to his chest. But that?s exactly what happens when she comes face-to-face with none other than Mr. Darcy himself. Suddenly, every woman?s fantasy becomes one woman?s reality. . . .

Praise for Me and Mr. Darcy:

??Unexpectedly charming. . . Me and Mr. Darcy offers a Pride and Prejudice - appropriate surprise. . . it turns out to be one of the wittier of this summer's offerings, not to mention sharp and sad in its observations about what spinsterhood, identity and aging look like for women in 2007.? ? Salon

?[Me and Mr. Darcy] takes the reader on an extended daydream with an appropriately pleasant ending. ? ? The Indianapolis Star

?Alexandra Potter?s clever comedy, an affectionate celebration of books and readers ? and bookstores ? might lead you to start browsing those travel websites yourself.?
? The Times- Picayune

?Pure candy for the imagination. . . Ms. Potter has worked literary magic with the creation of Me and Mr. Darcy.? ? CoffeeTimeRomance.com

??Refreshing?? ? Publishers Weekly
