Book Reviews of Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy PregnancyBook Review: The best pregnancy book I've read Summary: 5 Stars
I already had the "What to expect when you are expecting" book when my sister gave me "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy". I was so impressed with the details on a week by week basis. The pictures of the different development stages of the fetus during pregnancy are by far better than the ones in the "What to expect ..." book. They are much more realistic. The book also has a wonderful section called the decision guide about all the different tests and possiblilities that helps me make my decisions in a non biased manner. Each month it also provides a list of issues that you may experience including if and when you should notify your doctor. Now I don't have to wonder if I am being a worry-wart over a trival issue or not. This will be the reference book I will use for the rest of my pregnancy! I also plan on giving this book to all my pregnant friends!!
Book Review: Great Resource! Summary: 5 Stars
My husband and I have been very glad we chose this book. It's a great resource, taking you through baby's development week by week as well as each month discussing the body changes and emotions you are experiencing. At the end of each month's "chapter" there is also a convenient chart with a list of symptoms and whether or not they are worth an immediate, next day or next visit chat with your OB. The index makes anything easy to find and symptoms are included in an alphabetical "glossary" format which makes what you are looking for really easy to find. There are also several articles about various issues that come up. Another nice feature is that there are no opinions in the book. Issues like genetic testing and breastfeeding are dealt with by presenting factual information, not based on opinions. This book is definitely worth it, especially if you are first time parents-to-be like we are!
Book Review: Great source of complete information Summary: 5 Stars
This book does not presume that women are stupid. It is well written and it provides a lot of medical and biological information. I understand it might be a tad too technical for some people, but I like the professional tone of the book since I am not a big pink bows and cotton clouds person. Actually I would have liked to have more dry data as numbers and statistics instead of "a lot of cases" or "this happens rarely".
I like also that they encourage women to take a natural approach to delivery, even when they are a medical editorial. I bought it together with the Pregnancy Bible http://www.amazon.com/Pregnancy-Bible-Complete-Guide-Parenthood/dp/1554073804/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1293568130&sr=1-1 and though a lot of the information is redundant, they do complement each other very well in many areas.
I very much recommend it, it is a great source!
Book Review: The best pregnancy book on the market Summary: 5 Stars
I agree 100% with the previous poster. Unlike "What to Expect," the Mayo Clinic guide is extremely well-organized, filled with useful data presented in a lucid and clear format, and has been vetted by medical professionals from the top health care center in the country. I bought "What to Expect" even before I conceived, but the sloppy organization and poorly researched substance of that book really frustrated me. "What to Expect" is also chock-full of lots of alarmist hypotheticals (e.g. does your "leaking microwave" oven jeopardize your pregnancy? Can you drink tap water while pregnant?). In contrast, the Mayo Clinic guide is very streamlined and full of useful and relevant medical data that you know you can trust. I would strongly recommend it to every expectant family that wants a well-presented, thorough, and reliable medical resource for pregnancy.
Book Review: Great read for epecting mothers (especially for your first) Summary: 5 Stars
My boyfriend bought me this book, and i have been using it as a reference for a lot of issues i never thought i would eperience. i am expecting my first baby, and didnt know what to make of the changes in my body. this book explains in very good detail the changes you and your baby are making during each stage of your pregnancy, as well as helpful tips on easing some of the discomforts that you amy eperience while pregnant.
Another feature i loved aboutthis book is the fact that it dosent end when you have the baby, but goes on into the symptomes of different illnesses that are common in newborn and young babies. as well as what to do in case of whatever emergency. Basicly i have been reading it and telling my boyfriend how great it is...i would definatly recommend this book, and will probably give it to a pregnant friend when the time comes.
