Book Reviews of Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy

Book Review: Very informative
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband and I just started to think about planning for a family so, me, being the researcher type wanted to know everything that is in store for us becoming parents. After reading all the reviews for "What to expect while your expecting" I didn't want to be scared out of my wits. So in buying this book I was happily surprised at what length the Mayo Clinic authors go to, to inform you of what is going on inside your body and all the things you can do to prevent or calm symptoms of pregnancy and also the warning signs and what to do when something is not "right" week by week. When I get pregnant I'll certainly use this as my go to guide before I call the Dr. about my concerns. A pro is the "When to call" checklist after every chapter. The book is broken down into parts: Part 1 "Pregnancy, childbirth and your newborn" (Preparing to have a baby), Part 2 "Decision guides for pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood", Part 3 "Pregnancy reference guide", Part 4 "Complications of pregnancy and childbirth". Overall, a good read and very easy to understand, straightforward and every section is well organized, there is no need to skip around to find what you are looking for. I'll recommend this book to friends, certainly.

Book Review: The best book for pregnancy medical advice
Summary: 5 Stars

Of the six pregnancy books I read when my wife was pregnant, I felt this book had the best medical advice. [And I'm not saying this because the author was our ObGyn!]

I liked this book the most because I felt the medical advice was the most complete and accurate. I liked this book the most because it put *some* information into a month-by-month format, but put most of the information where it belongs, into their own chapters outside the month-by-month format. And I liked this book the most because the end of each chapter gave a "When to Call" table. Learning about symptoms is useful, learning about the fetus' development is fun, but knowing when to see a doctor because of a medial issue is absolutely critical, and this book gets that part right.

It also covers information on taking your baby home and post-partium care.

Note that this book is NOT the _Mayo Clinic Complete Book of Pregnancy and Baby's First Year_. This book is a reasonably sized 600 page paperback that's comfortable to read in bed. The aforementioned _Mayo Clinic Complete Book of Pregnancy and Baby's First Year_ is a huge 800 page 8x11 HARDBACK that belongs in a doctor's office, not in your bedroom.

Book Review: I kept this book on my bedside table.
Summary: 5 Stars

When I got pregnant I went to the bookstore and skimmed through all the pregnancy books and bought this one. While I got a number of other pregnancy books as hand-me-downs, this is the one that I kept on my bedside table and referred to whenever I had any questions.

As other reviewers have said, this book is so well-organized. For women like me who are inclined the worry about all the weird little things that happen in your body during pregnancy, the boxes at the end of each chapter saying which symptoms are normal and which ones signal a need for immediate attention are very helpful. They saved me a lot of unnecessary worry and unnecessary calls to the ob.

The other thing I liked about this book is that it did provide all the information I needed. Unlike other pregnancy books, I didn't feel that it was "dumbed down" for the general audience. I really felt that it provided enough information to help me make decisions about prenatal testing, nutrition, a birth plan, etc.

I'm extremely grateful to this book. I have lent it out to a pregnant friend of mine, but I know that I will want it back on my bedside table the next time that I am pregnant.

Book Review: Amazing book--great guide!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read the reviews of this book and thought I'd check it out. I got it while we were trying, and its chart on when you're likely to conceive did the trick. We're now expecting! This book is extremely helpful. It goes week-by-week and lets you know what's going on with the baby AND what's going on with your body. It doesn't scare you into thinking something will go wrong, but it certainly helps allay your fears by explaining why things are going as they are. The charts telling you when to tell your doctor about various symptoms are really helpful. It doesn't give you too much information in large chunks, either--in other words, your husband might be willing to read it, too, at least the parts about what the baby is looking like and what's going on in the womb! Being able to focus on the week-by-week developments is great. I can look ahead to see what to expect or just focus on what's going on this week. The "common concerns and questions of pregnancy" guide at the back is also really helpful: it's an alphabetical list of typical pregnancy problems/questions (acne, fatigue, red plams and soles, etc.), their description, and how to deal with such issues.
I highly recommend this book.

Book Review: Very Helpful Book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I decided to buy this book based on the amazon reviews,
and I was very happy!
I WAS a nervous first time mom, and this book really helped ease my worries. This book doesn't try to sugar coat problems in pregnancy, but those types of topics don't overshadow the whole book either! It's very honest, informative, and positive.
I also felt very confident reading this book, knowing that it is written by TWO doctors.

I love how this book goes in depth about the baby's development for each week, (and illustrations of size). It also goes over what to expect each month from your changing body, what is normal, and what you should talk to your doctor about.

It covers just about everything!
Explaining prenatal testing, regular birth routines, C-Section, circumcision pros and cons, a glossary where you can look up your specific problem (such as back ache, side aches, breast pain, etc., how to find relief, and more!

I really feel if you have this book you don't need any other pregnancy book. Except probably a book that goes more in depth for nutrition, because this book just goes over the basics.

Enjoy!
