Book Reviews of Mastering the art of French Cooking 50th AnniversaryBook Review: A must for every library Summary: 5 Stars
I'm delighted to see that Julia's cornerstone book has been re-issued. It is a must. If I were sent to a desert island and allowed to bring only two cookbooks I'd take this and Joy of Cooking. Julia adds not only relatively more sophisticated recipes, but the techniques Joy lacks. Beard's Theory and Practice of Cooking would be third on my list for a new cook. Begining cooks need not be intimidated by Julia's book. At the time it was written most Americans had no knowledge of French cooking. This was THE book designed to introduce Frence ingredients, recipes and techniques. It still does that with good illustrations and recipes any cook can execute to perfection. Experienced cooks will be delighted with the variety of excellent recipes, many well suited to low carb cooking. This a book that has served me well for over 30 years.
Book Review: Fabulous Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this book as a Birthday present for my daughter. She watched the movie Julie and Julia and really wanted the book. She told me they cost too much money, about $40.00. She is a struggling student at a local college and I knew I could get it from Amazon for much less than $40. I went on-line and right to your website and voila, there it was for only $19. When the book came in I figured it would be all dog eared, dirty and torn cover, but to my amazement, the book was pristine. It was a reprint and an anniversary edition and I was extremely pleased. I have to wrap it up and wait until early March for the birthday girl to open it, but as always, everything I purchase from Amazon is no less than perfect, even the used books. Glad you are there for me and I do recommend you every chance I get. Thanks, Amazon.
Book Review: Authoritative Summary: 5 Stars
I have been a long time fan of Julia Child for her wit and humor. Her shows are still so entertaining to watch. But don't be fooled by her fun demeanor. She is a serious student and teacher of French cooking. I respect her and trust this book for recipes that are authentic and work flawlessly. I recently made crepes for the first time and tried her recipe for the batter. I was delighted to find them delicious with just the right flavor and consistency. That was no surprise to me at all. This book is great because gives the reader the knowledge to master the fundamental sauces and building blocks of classic French cuisine. Kudos to Julia Child for her anniversary edition of this cook's essential! If you're serious about cooking like I am, please do yourself a favor by rewarding yourself with this wonderful cooking tutorial.
Book Review: The Masters Tour Summary: 5 Stars
The combination of Child and Rombauer cannot be beaten. These two extra- "ordinary" women laid claim to and then made accessible to us (who were raised, however gratefully, on dinners of tomato-macaroni hotdish, tuna casserole, and meatloaf with baked potatoes and frozen green peas) an entirely new culinary landscape. The recipes are meticulously set out; and although they are often laborious, are definitely worth trying at least once. Those of you who meet with success, i.e. you read the recipes through from start to finish before beginning and then carefully follow the directions, are rewarded with numerous delicious variations on many of the techiques.
Regardless of your opinion of blogster Julia Moskin, her work re-opened the door to this masterpiece, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking." Brava.
Book Review: I love Julia Child! Summary: 5 Stars
As with many people, I naively found out about Julia Child and her cook book after watching the film Julie and Julia. With a passion about France anyway I thought I'd give this book a go and have thoroughly loved it. I've made her famous beef bourguignon which my husband completely raved about and her coq au vin which was amazingly delicious. The recipes are easy to follow and all the ingredients are listed down the left hand side of the page which is also easy at a glance. You do need to set aside some time to cook, this is not a throw it all together in 10 minutes, however if you want that special meal and advice also on accompanying wine then I'd definately recommend it. It's also wonderful to see recipes of the past that can be repeated and thoroughly enjoyed. It's definitely spurred on a passion to cook!
