Book Reviews of Mastering the art of French Cooking 50th Anniversary

Book Review: Greatest Cookbook EVER!
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently have been cooking a lot more than I used to. Seems the older I get the more I enjoy it. Mom knew a lot of these recipe's but never taught them to anyone, her idea of teaching me to cook was to sit and watch her....talk about boring, and not learning anything!

I got this book originally from the library, just to try "Boeuf Bourguignon" recipe. WOW is one best word to describe it. While I had the book in my possession, I have tried a number of the recipe's and the outcome of all have just been mouth watering. I never thought that I would be preparing and eating fantastic French cuisine.

This book is one of the best cookbooks that a person could have as part of their library. You won't be sorry that you tried it.

Like Julia's cooking show, her humor is in the book as well, in little info tidbits. Anyone that loved Julia Child would appreciate this as well.

Upon returning the book to the library myself, I ran out to buy a copy. My philosophy is that you cannot have too many GOOD cookbooks.

Book Review: A classic indeed...
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this book recently and I am super-pleased with it. The writing is very enjoyable and the directions on the recipes and added cultural information are superb. This classic belongs in every kitchen, so don't hesitate to purchase it. If you're still not convinced here's some good reasons for you to get it:
-The book itself is exquisite and I love the cover colors (very French) and the illustrations.
-The list of utensils that you should have is very helpful especially if you're setting up your first kitchen.
-When you start to read it, you can tell that not only was great care put into its writing but a lot of love.
-Everyone who wants to be successful in the kitchen needs to know some basic techniques, this books clearly explains them. Think of it as cooking for dummies.
-French cuisine is very versatile and if you can succede here, you'll be set for other cuisines.
-If you're stumped on the perfect gift for a freshman or newlyweds, be stumped no more. You've found the ideal gift.

Book Review: THe whole story is fascinating
Summary: 5 Stars

I went to see the movie, so I figured I had to get the book and it's really interesting- both the story and the food. Some of the philosophy reminds me of that cute Pixar movie Ratatouille- "anyone can cook" in th eFrench style of haute cuisine. That's what Child professed and that's what she's showing in her book "Mastering the Art of French COoking".

Most of the recipes fit into the French Women Don't Get Fat diet rather than my favorite The Evolution Diet: All-Natural and Allergy Free, but there are still some valuable bits. The vegetable sides are really marvelous and the Charcuterie section has some delectible entrees that would fit well in the natural diet.

Overall, it's a foodie's must! Buy this and enjoy a year's full of recipes in the French style with the ease of American practicality.

Book Review: Simply the best!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been a subscriber to high-end food magazines for decades, and have an extensive collection of cookbooks. This is the best cook book in print, without exception. I remember when Julia came on the scene when I was a child. It was, no exaggeration.....innovative. She used words we couldn't pronounce, showed us how to make dishes we were unfamiliar with, and showed us techniques that were unheard of to the American public. Almost 40 years later, the American palette has become more sophisticated and the food options available to us seem endless. This book stills holds up as the best. It is the primer for understanding French cooking, and mastering invaluable techniques in the kitchen.

I love good food and enjoy cooking. The problem is, after twenty something years cooking I still have to admit that I have no natural talent or culinary instinct. EVERYTIME I use this book I am successful. Don't let the title of this book intimidate you. This book was written in large part with the novice in mind.

Book Review: French cooking with ingredients in American grocery stores
Summary: 5 Stars

The best Coq au Vin and Boeuf Bourguignon recipes you'll find are in this book. I've had Mastering the Art of French Cooking for years and recently gave one to my son, who also loves to cook. This cookbook tells you what to do, how to do it, and where to easily find the ingredients in your American supermarket. I don't do much (any?) baking, so don't have Volume II Mastering the Art of French Cooking Vol. 2 (Paperback), which I understand is primarily about baking, but this one, Volume 1, is fantastic.

This book and The Joy of Cooking by Irma Rombauer, Marion Rombauer Becker and Ethan Becker Joy of Cooking: 75th Anniversary Edition - 2006 are the first ones I turn to in the kitchen. Together, they will teach the new cook how to cook and the experienced cook how to cook much better.
