Book Reviews of Mass Effect: AscensionBook Review: OK book, but something is missing Summary: 3 Stars
I reviewed ME's first book, "Revelation" (which I think was a great book), and wanted badly to say something better about this book. Don't take me wrong. It's not bad. Mr. Karpyshyn's writing is always god, always flows well. But the main problem with this book is that, somehow, this story doesn't feel like it deserves a book!
The main plot does not feel worthy of much. The author creates good characters, and makes it better because of them. But in the end, the story itself is not that good. At least not grand enough for this kind of reading, and the ME universe. It feels like an excuse to connect dots withing the games.
Overall, the writing is as good as in all his books, but there's not enough "meat" in this book. It's a little too forgettable. It's not a big book, and it's light reading. But still feels like it could have been told in fewer pages. Which is an odd feeling for such a small book.
Book Review: Just for Mass Effects fans. Summary: 3 Stars
Mass Effect: Ascension is a book purely for Mass Effect fans. If you have no idea what Mass Effect is, don't bother even considering to buy this books. The story develops pretty slow and really is not all that exciting especially the first dozen chapters. But the book was intended to advance the Mass Effect plot from the months after the ending of Mass Effect (the game) and it does a pretty good job at that. It introduces a new race, The Collectors, and gives more information on the human terrorist group Cerberous. So it's not a must read for ME fans but if you have a lot of time it's not a waste.
Book Review: Much Better! Summary: 3 Stars
On the whole a much better novel than Revelation. One that got me *hating* Cerberus and left me distrustful of everything the Illusive Man said in Mass Effect 2. I quite enjoyed the detailing of the Quarian culture and the brief interlude on Omega.
I wish some of the characters from this novel could have turned up in the game! Particularly Kahlee Sanders.
Some more science (or pseudo-science) on the Mass Effect field, Biotics and such would not have gone astray.
Book Review: Not as good as "Revelation" Summary: 3 Stars
Read it, liked it but I'm not thrilled with it. I began Mass Effect Revelation with a bit of reluctance. After 10 pages, I couldn't leave it.
Sadly, I cannot say the same about Ascension. It's not bad but not as catchy as her predecessor. Recommended for those who want to know a bit more from the ME Universe (and perhaps a connection to the game sequel)
Book Review: Adds Nothing to the overall story. 1st Book Better. Summary: 3 Stars
If you are hoping for a continuation of the story, you will be disappointed. It is a generic SciFi story with Mass Effect races involved. The first book at least leads into the story of the game.
