Book Reviews of Mass Effect: AscensionBook Review: Not big enough Summary: 4 Stars
Drew Karpyshyn can always be counted on to deliver a great read; unfortunately, with this book he is given a very rigid storyline. This amounts to very limited action and a very small scope for a story that should be epic. The book takes place in about 3 locations and it isn't very action packed. Drew can still tell a compelling story although I get the feel this book is used mainly to plug Mass Effect 2 instead of really expanding on the universe. It is a good read for those interested in the game, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who wants true sci-fi escapism. I would recommend any Darth Bane book if you want to appreciate how good of a writer Drew Karpyshyn is. I just wish this story could have been bigger.
Book Review: Not only for gamers Summary: 4 Stars
With the success of the computer game a book tie-in is not surprising, what was surprising is that the this book is actually a decent read. It is an interesting mix of sci-fi, adventure and crime genres with even a militaristic touch. It can be a bit hard to follow at first due to the letter anagrams but as I got deeper into the novel I wanted to know what was at the bottom of all this...
Not all is revealed in this book so I am assuming there will be more books to follow? One disclaimer, I am a gamer but I also read a lot and I don't think you have to be a gamer to enjoy this novel.
Book Review: Satisfies Summary: 4 Stars
Having read the previous mass effect book, I was hoping this one would be better. As someone who's gotten completely obsessed with the mass effect universe, this one didn't disappoint! The plot and character development were better, and there is more detail about the galaxy itself - particularly the quarian culture, Omega, and Cerberus as an organization.
I probably wouldn't recommend it if you don't know the games, but I felt it was a good addition to the games. It explains some of the things that come up in Mass Effect 2 (like why quarians don't like Cerberus).
Book Review: I want more! Summary: 4 Stars
It has been a while since I read the first book so it took me a while to remember the back story and get the names/history straightened out. By that time, I was well into the story and enjoying it. And then it ended. Too soon and right when the momentum was really picking up. It is still a great read and I just wish that the story had gone further. Hopefully the next book will pick up where this left off and start pulling the story together between the two books.
Book Review: Great insight into both Cerberus and the Quarian race Summary: 4 Stars
Ascension is a great read which focuses on three main elements in the Mass Effect universe: Biotics, Quarians, and Cerberus. The story is really fantastic, although it doesn't directly tie into the games as much as the other books in the series. Still, it gives you a greater understanding and appreciation of a plethora of things referenced to in Mass Effect 2. I definitely recommend reading this book.
