Book Reviews of Mass Effect: Ascension

Book Review: Karpyshyn Continues to Impress
Summary: 5 Stars

Mass Effect: Ascension is technically a sequel to the game, although it has almost nothing to do with the game, aside from a quick reference to it in the first chapter. Despite it's non-relation to one of my favorite video games of all time, the story still had me rapidly turning pages whenever I could bury myself into the book. I will try not reveal too much, but after reading this book I found that I had a severe interest in one of the alien species, the Quarians. The species is commonly brought up throughout the plot, and they became more and more interesting as their history and culture was revealed. In Mass Effect, people and aliens alike can harness fields of energy that can be used as a weapon in battle. These 'powers' are known as biotics, and along with the Quarian sub-stories, learning more about these powers was by far the most interesting part for me. The plot was fine, but what really sold me on it was the fictional facts behind every detail that I was curious about. Karpyshyn is a fantastic author and I look forward to reading Mass Effect: Retribution.

Book Review: Another great book for the Mass Effect series
Summary: 5 Stars

Mass Effect: Ascension takes place after the end of Commander Shepard's adventure in the game. And it appropriately expands upon the Mass Effect universe introducing new locations while giving more background to what followers of series may already know.

Reading Mass Effect: Revelation or playing the game isn't necessary to enjoy this book. The story can stand by its self but not being familiar with the rest of series before reading it could mean missing a few references and misinterpreting a couple of events in the story.

The biggest difference between Ascension and Revelation is that in this book it feels like Karpyshyn has refined the style of writing he first used in Revelation. The characters are far more fleshed out and defined in terms of both behaviors and attitude. Locations are better described visually, including the population of the locations, and even action sequences are easier to follow.

If you are a fan of the Mass Effect series or like a good Sci-Fi space opera you will enjoy this book.

Book Review: Good Read, Good Game
Summary: 5 Stars

People who enjoy the Mass Effect Universe will enjoy this book. The story of Mass Effect 2 and this novel are not directly intertwined as they were with Mass Effect 1 and the first Mass Effect novel, but it is beautifully written so that it does enrich the plot of the game and greatly increases your knowledge of the game universe. If you play games and you read books, then the entire Mass Effect Series will be great for you. Start with the first novel, play the first game, read the second novel, play the second game, then you will be ready for the 3rd novel coming out July 2010. If you have not started any of that then you will be in for a treat and great entertainment for a while to come. This is probably the best all around series in the video game world.

Being independent from the story of the game should also make this enjoyable to a person who does not play the game.

Book Review: Interesting read
Summary: 5 Stars

The first Mass Effect game is pretty awesome. Apparently, BioWare is planning to make a second Mass Effect game and this novel, like the first one, is a precursor for the second game. Ascension has familiar characters from the first novel. Many of you will remember Kahlee Sanders from the first novel. She makes a return in Ascension as a scientist helping gifted children tune their biotic capabilities. Without spoiling much, the story gets quite interesting. You read about how Kahlee and her companions get on board the Quarian colony ship. I always wonder about Quarians and their colony of ships and this book sort of explains it and I'm pretty sure it sounds like the second game will expand on this concept. Overall good book and fun to read. Definitely worth the 8 dollars, in my opinion.

Book Review: Great read, kept me wanting more
Summary: 5 Stars

So this book I have to say has been one of the first books to grab my attention and interest so quickly. After playing Mass Effect two times over and still wanting more, these books were the great alternative to the wait for Mass Effect 2 to be released.

The writing style and attention to detail of each part of the story makes me feel like I am walking through the Citadel and every other part of the Alliance Space System. I read this one first and now I'm going back to read the first book of the series to get a little more of a back story. If you are looking for a good political/military based hard sci-fi book this would be the perfect book for you!!!
