Book Reviews of Mary Nohl: Inside & Outside

Book Review: A wonderful surprise, in touch with nature
Summary: 5 Stars

My daughter gave me this book as a gift for my birthday, I did not know anything about Mary Nohl up to this point. My daughter knows I love all art & thought it sounded interesting. WOW am I happy she bought me this gift! The entire story of Mary Nohl's life had me intrigued, the book is very well written, sensitive to the facts & the quality & production of the book is excellent. I attended Cardinal Stritch College in 1972/'73 & after reading the book recalled something about this artist that lived in Fox Piont,WI near the college. I can almost recall hearing about the "witch"(not) & perhaps even drove to see the place, it was a long time ago! To be able to hold onto one's child-like-wonder in the world today is a gift all by it's self, but Mary Nohl seems to have been able to create her world & her very personal art with ease & live this type of existence most of her life. I discovered that all her art "inside & outside" has been bequeathed to the John Michael Kohler Art Center/Foundation in Sheboygan, WI. Prasie God that this collection of a wonderful outsider artist is being protected, or at least for now has faithful guardians! I wish I could have known Mary Nohl, I wish I had a neighbor like her, maybe a little eccentric but a heck of a lot of fun! The book is fun to read & I came away better for having discovered this artist! I recently made the trip from Waukesha, WI to Sheboygan to visit the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Mary's art is not on display at this time (July 2009) but I look forward to the day when I can see some of it in person & I proudly support the foundation & all it's efforts to preserve all forms of the arts. The story of Mary Nohl made me smile "inside & outside"

Summary of Mary Nohl: Inside & Outside

Outsider artist, sophisticated naďf, and witch are all labels that have described Mary Nohl (1914?2001), creator of a magical and mysterious site on the shore of Lake Michigan near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Here she constructed huge concrete heads, stone-encrusted creatures, and imposing driftwood figures to fill the yard surrounding a modest cottage where she spent most of her life. Carved heads hang from the eaves, wind chimes tinkle in the trees, and pebbles at her doorstep spell ?Boo.? The cottage is painted and embellished inside and out with wooden fish, boats, animals, and leaping figures. Wire, hemp, chicken bones, egg shells, aluminum pans, broken glass?almost any castoff materials available?were used by Nohl to create her art and ornament her surroundings.
Mary Nohl: Inside & Outside offers the first comprehensive look into the unusual life of a remarkable artist whose surroundings stand as a monument to her creative personality. Establishing Nohl as a notable ?outsider? artist, Barbara Manger and Janine Smith offer an inside look at an artist whose idiosyncratic art?pieces whose allure is only heightened by the intrigue and legends surrounding their creator?attracted generations of visitors who peered through the fence at Nohl?s wildly decorated yard but rarely caught a glimpse of the elusive artist.

?This sensitive, meticulously researched book sheds needed light on the life and work of an underappreciated visionary. It should advance the cause of preserving Mary Nohl?s fragile work in all of its fevered complexity.??Whitney Gould, former architecture critic and urban landscape writer, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
