Book Reviews of Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness

Book Review: Kickin' Ash
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay. Enough is enough...take a cool, interesting concept where Spiderman, Colonel America, The Hulk, The X-men and all the rest of the Marvel Super-heroes turn into zombies (Marvel Zombies), then add in Evil Dead II's Ash Williams and you've got a campy cash-in on two cult classics, right?

WRONG!

Evil Dead II + Marvel Zombies = a prequel to the latter that turns out to be an enjoyable hour of time that surpasses a heck of a lot of the silly movies in the genre that I've sat through in recent times.

Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness is an exceptionally well-done tale of what would happen in parallel universe where some of our favorite super-heroes co-exist with Ash from The Evil Dead movies. What happens? Well, our super-heroes turned zombies encounter a whole lotta boomstick, that's what happens.

This story is extremely well-written, but the creator of Marvel Zombies is reduced to a consulting role and it shows a bit. But it certainly doesn't come between a super-hero sized good time. Although, I'd definitely recommend checking out Kirkman's Marvel Zombies release before delving into this prequel. (Kirkman is also the creator of the awesome Walking Dead series.)

Do you like zombie flicks? Do you enjoy the Marvel super-hero stories? Did you like Evil Dead II? Yes? Then Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness is an excellent, quick read, prequel that you'd be remiss to deprive yourself of.

Check it out.

Book Review: Enjoyable For Marvel Zombies Fans
Summary: 4 Stars

Let's be serious...the Marvel Zombies series, no matter how much you enjoy it, will probably not win any noteworthy awards. Do NOT let that stop you from enjoying this latest entry in the series.

A quick de-brief if you're unfamiliar with the concept: alternate Marvel universe, zombie plague, superhero zombies eat population. I STRONGLY encourage reading Marvel Zombies before reading Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness. Just sayin'.

So, Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness acts as more of a prequel to the orginial Marvel Zombies miniseries. Ash, the hero of the movie "Army of Darkness", winds up transported by evil forces to the alternate Marvel reality...right about the same time the zombie plague began. Talk about timing. Ash encounters several superheroes and villains as he tries to figure out what started the plague and how to stop it.

Plot: Here's where reading the original series comes in (and I'm not really spoiling anything for you here)...every hero and villain is either killed is some beautifully grotesque fashion or becomes a zombie. Or both. But, like they say, it's all about the journey, not the destination. Half the fun is watching the events unfold.

Art: Beautiful art, right down to the bones jutting out of the undead's rib cages. This is NOT a book for children. It's a tongue-in-cheek look at "What If The Marvel Heroes & Villains You Grew Up With...Became Vile, Flesh-Eating Zombies?"

Bottom line: Adults who like zombie movies and Marvel will enjoy this book. If you haven't seen it, rent Army of Darkness before you read this book (though it's not required). A great addition to a franchise that I hope continues to grow like an undead horde.

Book Review: Not very memorable, but fun!
Summary: 4 Stars

Ash meets the Marvel Zombie Universe and pretty much lets them destroy themselves, he's just along for the ride, as he passes through their dimension.

This is a fun read, but really has no memorable moments. The art, however, is great! I'm always disappointed by comics that have great cover art but lame interiors, but this was a pleasant surprise.

I haven't been interested in any other Marvel Zombie books, but the AOD factor was enough to make me pick this one up.

Buy it if you like pointless crossovers.

Book Review: GREAT ADDITION TO THE SERIES!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

Let me start by saying, I am a big fan of the "Marvel Zombie" Series, and will always buy any new additions to the story. As long as Kirkman, Suydam, and the others are still on board.

The first series for me so far remains the best one. But this story was a fun read. I think the "Army of Darkness" fans would like this VERY MUCH! Which I am not.

Its a safe buy for both "Marvel Zombie" and "Army of Darkness" fans alike. Enjoy!!!

Book Review: I liked it
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this as a Christmas present for a friend after I failed to find the original Marvel Zombies and ended up reading through it myself. I think I might have liked it more than he did. The story is well written, and despite the horrifying subject there are still a few pretty funny moments. The art is really good. If you like Evil Dead or Marvel, even a litte bit, I think you should buy this.
