Book Reviews of Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness

Book Review: Ash comes to kick some Marvel butt
Summary: 5 Stars

The biggest comic event of 2007 is here! No, I'm not talking about the lackluster wimpy end to Marvel's Civil War, and we all know nobody cares about DC's lame weakly event 52; it's Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness! One of the sleeper hits of last year, the five issue mini-series published by Marvel Comics; Marvel Zombies came out of nowhere and blew both horror and spandex wearing comic fans away.

Written by comic zombie guru Robert Kirkman with art by the critically acclaimed Sean Phillips; Marvel Zombies expanded upon a plotline developed by writer Mark Millar in issues #21-23 of Ultimate Fantastic Four. With all types of alternate realities spun out of the real Marvel Universe like the Ultimate universe, New Universe and wherever the hell Squadron Supreme came from, Millar decided to create another universe; one populated by superhero zombies.

While Millar's three issue storyline hinted at the possibility of such a world, it was Kirkman's mini series that established it as fact; well, comic book continuity based fact. Kirkman's mini-series, as glorious and unbelievably brilliant as it was never exposed the origin of the zombie outbreak. Its stated that the Marvel version of Superman, the Sentry, was the first to succumb to the infection. But with panels featuring everything from Captain America touching his exposed brain, to a horde of zombies chowing down on Galactus, few complained.

But for those few dorks still wondering about the virus' origin, pick up Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness to find out that everyone's favorite hapless, one handed hero might be the one to blame. Ash arrives in the alternate Marvel Universe the day of the original zombie outbreak. Writer John Layman does a great job with the bravado exuding Ash and displays a decent knowledge of the Marvel characters. While the art is not as polished as Sean Phillips on the original series, Fabiano Neves does a great job of capturing the classic Marvel look while maintaining an edgy quality. Anyone questioning the validity of these two creators need look no further than the third to last page featuring a great shot of Marvel hero Hawkeye chowing down on a headfull of brains to feel secure in forking over the asking price.

With a third printing of the hardcover collection on the way, along with a proposed second miniseries and another crossover with the Ultimate Universe; 2007 is set to be the year of the Marvel Zombie. Hollywood has already expressed interest in the project and with Marvel heading up their own studio; a feature film is a small but splendid possibility. Plus be on the look out for a Marvel Zombies action figure line later this year and a deluxe statue featuring a undead Spider-Man and a very dead Mary Jane. If nothing else reels you in, issue #2 of gMarvel Zombies vs. Army of Darknessh promises to feature fan-favorite disco superhero Dazzler fighting a zombified Howard the Duck, for that alone Ifve gotta make mine Marvel! Zombies that is.
