Book Reviews of Marvel Zombies

Book Review: "Look---up in the Sky! It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's---YAAAAARRRGHHH!"
Summary: 5 Stars

The Dead Rise, and they can rise even faster with Super-Spandex and the ability to Fly, oh yes!

Calamity! A Supervirus from the darkest reaches of Outer Space has descended from the stars, ravaging Earth and turning billions into flesh-eating zombies in a matter of hours! Catastrophe! Civilization as we know it collapses, and smoke billows up over dying Cities of Earth, turned into blood-drenched abattoirs, overrun wth the Living Dead.

This is a job for a Superhero! This is a Job for---CAPTAIN AMERICA!

Scratch that: the Cap---well, now "Colonel" America, used to be President of the United States---is now zombified, along with pretty much all of the Earth's superheroes, looking to make you into a little slab of ground round.

Wolverine? Scratch that, sport. Same deal, only Wolverine brings his own little gardening shears to the party to, well, you know, slice & dice the turkey, so to speak.

Hulk? Thor? The Amazing Spider-man? Ironman? All toast. Well, actually, all superpowered superzombies, all very hungry, and all willing and able to make you---yeah, you---and our buddies, the President of the United States & the Joint Chiefs of Staff & mebbe even the Supreme Court, hiding out in that underground military base or abandoned locked-down lab,--- Toast. With a side order of Human (tastes like chicken) and a little guts for marmalade.

They're mad, bad, hungry, and---in Robert Kirkman's wickedly funny "Marvel Zombies'---they're really going to take a Bite out of Crime.

Or anyone else who stands in the way of Truth, Justice, the American Way---& the right to three square meals! And who can blame them? Certainly not Magneto, who has stuck around in this alternate universe long after he discovers the double-cross by the zombified alternate Fantastic Four, and shortly after he realizes that having total power over metal and ore doesn't necessarily make the best Offense against the really hungry (super-powered) Living Dead.

Is a ham-sandwich by any other name nearly so tasty? Sure it is, when it's Black Panther, one of the last still human super-heroes, kept drug-addled and helpless in Giant-Man's pantry, but every-useful for a little chunk of flesh or guts or foot or leg or hand, just for munchies, and not cruel at all, but chiefly because the Marvel-Zombies retain their intellectual faculties, somewhat, but they get dumber and duller and more deranged with hunger.

And given the fact that it took all of them---Colonel America, Iron-Man, The Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, Giant-Man, the whole zombified gang---about 4 hours to do a global Mickey-D's Happy Meal, the pressing issue---the crisis for our Superheroes to Solve!---become where to form up for the next Chow-Line.

It's a bit depressing, and, if you're a sensitive soul, more than a little tragic. If you really want to get bleak, read Busiek & Ross's "Marvels", to get a glimpse of all the mortal trepidation that preceded Humanity's newest rung as Super-Hero-dom's main course. Sick stuff.

Sicker still is Colonel America's head as a kind of uber-ChiaPet-land fit for the spawn of vultures & ravens, exactly what happens to the Hulk's frightfully human gut when he morphs back into an undead Bruce Banner after dinner, Spidey's ability to quip (and his bouts of guilt over chomping down on Aunt May & MJ, Giant-Man's giganto-dose of remorse when it comes to chowing down on his best buddy and best girl, or even the vileness of the encounter between the Herald of Galactus, the Silver Surfer, & the Living Super-Dead---who are all too happy to greet a thousand-foot (angry) sub-sandwich!

Could it be scarier? More suspensful? Less comedic? Certainly so: I would have much preferred a tale wherein the last human survivors of the Zombie Plague have holed up in Cheyenne Mountain and are using every method known to Modern Military Science to keep the lights on. But Kirkman and artist Sean Phillips have concocted a brutal little potboiler that gnaws on flesh, leaps tall buildings with a single bound, eats anything on the other side, and is even able to go interstellar---tough luck for the aliens who get to encounter Marvel Zombies version 2.0!

Brutal, nasty, sick, disgusting, and positively reeking of super-powered rot, "Marvel Zombies" brings a whole new meaning to "You Are What you Eat"----or more to the point, "with Great Power comes Great Responsibility"---& a Damned Big appetite.

Dig in.
