Book Review: I really really tried to like Martin Misunderstood

I really really tried to like Martin Misunderstood. I even listened to it about 3 times, hoping each time I'd enjoy it more than the last time. But sadly, nothing worked. I could not get into this story to save my life. I've been procrastinating big time on writing this review for that very reason.
Martin Reed is just a normal, average, underrated guy. His life has completely stalled out, along with his dead end job as an accountant at Southern Toilet Supply. No one respects him, no one even particularly likes him. His only escape from his miserable existence and his nag of a mother is his passion for mystery novels.
When strange things begin happening at work and his coworkers start ending up dead, Martin is finally the center of attention... as the prime suspect.
Perhaps it is evidence of Karin Slaughter's writing skill that Martin comes across as so incredibly pitiful and pathetic. Unfortunately she does it so well that I hated Martin and couldn't believe anyone would have so bad of a life they'd go to the measures he does to stay in the limelight in the way he does.
I definitely got the impression Slaughter was going for a twisted humor in this story. Either I have absolutely no sense of humor (which I find hard to believe) or the humor attempts are so far out there in Martin Misunderstood, that all I could do was roll my eyes at the sad attempt. I found nothing at all redeemable about the story or its characters I'm afraid. I can't wait to donate this one to the library and have it no longer taking up space on my book shelf.
I do have to say however, Wayne Knight does a bang up job performing this book. He has a great sense of timing and has the perfect voice for each character's personality. It is only because of his performance that I even managed to finish this book. And he is the only reason I could possibly find to recommend Martin Misunderstood to anyone.

Summary of Martin Misunderstood
A riveting, darkly humorous tale narrated by Seinfeld's "Newman" - Wayne Knight!Martin Misunderstood tells the story of Martin Reed, an average man who wonders how he has wound up with such an abysmally empty existence. Working as a senior accountant at Southern Toilet Supply and still living with his nagging mother, his sole source of excitement is the crime novels he cherishes. So immersed is Martin in these escapes he fails to notice the crimes going on all around him. When first one, then another, of his co-workers is brutally murdered, Martin steps in to help the investigation, bringing his amateur detecting skills to bear. But Martin realizes too late that what he has mistaken for the glow of the spotlight, is actually the harsh glare of interrogation.
