Book Reviews of Making It All Work: Winning at the Game of Work and Business of Life

Book Review: Similar to his first book, but more focused on implementation
Summary: 4 Stars

David Allen's latest book "Making It All Work" is the third book by the author dealing with the "Getting Things Done" system. I read his first book ("Getting Things Done") and was surprised by how rigid the system seemed, and how "office" focused it was. I am a sales rep who spends a great deal of my time in front of customers and on the road, so many parts of the GTD system are just not as easy to implement for me as they might be for someone who is in a physical office of their own 5 days a week. That said, this new book by David Allen is focused more on how to customize and implement GTD and make it your own, and for that I am grateful. One of the things this book did convince me of was the need to use more "analog" tools (i.e., pen and paper) to track my progress on actionable items, and to "write it down to get it out of my head." I also have taken to heart his suggestion of creating certain lists by "context" (for example, an "@Waiting For" category that allows me to clear my mind of a task that has been delegated to someone else, while still retaining control over the task and remember to close the open loop). In a nutshell, if you read his first book (or second book) and think there were some valuable insights, this is a good follow-up. However, if you haven't read Getting Things Done yet, I'd recommend that you buy that book before this one, or a lot of this book just won't make sense.
