Book Reviews of Maine Lodges and Sporting Camps (ME) (Images of America)

Book Review: The Rustic Elegance of Maine's Old Resorts
Summary: 5 Stars

Donald Wilson's book shows many of the old hotels, guest houses, lodges, and camps dating principally through the early years of the 20th century. This is not ancient history; it is your grandparents' Maine. The book is organized geographically and includes sections on Northern Maine, Central Maine, Grand Lakes Stream, Sebec Lake, Kennebec River, Moosehead Lake, Belgrade Lakes, and Sebago Lake. In addition to the photos of the hotels and camps, Wilson presents us with menus, advertisements, steamboats, and of course the long strings of trout and salmon which were the original attraction. The modern reader will find the neckties and white linen tablecloths to be anachronistic. Many, if not most, of the lodges and camps in this book are long gone, victims of fire and development. Donald Wilson's book, depicting a Maine of 50 to 100 years ago, will make the reader want to re-visit today's Maine, before it, too, is lost to the rush of civilization.

Donald A. Wilson is also the author of five other books in the Images of America Series: "Maine's Steamboating Past" (see my review), "Maine's Lodges and Sporting Camps" (see my review), "Maine's Hunting Past," "Maine's Angling Past," and "Logging and Lumbering in Maine."

Summary of Maine Lodges and Sporting Camps (ME) (Images of America)

Beginning in the mid-1800s and lasting for more than a century, Maine boasted a large number of lodges and sporting camps that catered to the pursuit of outdoor activities. While the primary interests of guests were fishing and hunting, many of the larger, more expensive resorts offered a variety of opportunities, including golf, horseback riding, tennis, boating, archery, and hiking, and some boasted gourmet dining and elegant parties. While some of these establishments survive, many have been demolished, existing only in memory and in photographs. Maine Lodges and Sporting Camps tells the story of the most prominent destinations, featuring nearly two hundred historic images that depict the life that existed when Maine was a sportsman's paradise, abounding in trophy game and fish.
