Book Reviews of Magician: Master (Riftwar Saga, Book 2)

Book Review: Fantastic follow up to Magician: Apprentice
Summary: 5 Stars

I heard about Raymond Feist on the R.A. Salvatore message board. Someone there reommended that I read Magician: Apprentice. I took him up on the idea and was entranced by what I read. So, I felt safe reading the second book in this Rift-War saga.

I am extremely happy to have rad the second book Magician: Master, from the first chapter I was again caught up in the storya nd right away I found myself invested in the lives and well being of the characters. One thing I really like about Feist is that he has a knack for making a section on a sub-plot still seem like it directly affects the main plot. Some authors seem compelled to have sub-plots but when they write them it seems forced and doesn't mesh with the story. Feist's sub-plots go hand in hand with the main plot and seem like they belong.

I really enjoy Feist's writing style. It, to me anyway, is a nice laid back style that lends itself well to reading. It seems Feist put a great deal of effort into letting this story flow from the pages. The book is some 490 pages yet once you start reading it you find yourself at the end before you know it.

Before I read Feist I mainly read Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance books. Little did I know this gem was sitting out there. I fully intend to keep reading book set in this world by Feist. I now rank Feist up there with some of my personal favorites and I am confident if you give him a chane you will enjoy this book as well. I highly recommend these two books.

Book Review: Amazing
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is absolutly amazing. It has been a long time since I have read a book this good. Even the first book wasn't this good. That book was Magician: Apprentence. The series is about a boy names Pug and a boy named Thomas. Pug starts out as a magicians apprentence learning spells. His master notices that he is able to do thaings that nobody has ever been able to do. Pug is captured by the enemy and sent back to their homeworld to work in the slave camps. While at the slave camps a "Black Robe" (magicain) finds him and trains him in the higher level magic of their world. When he has learned the higher level of magic, we find out that he is able to tap the power of two worlds. He is the only magican able to do this on either of the two worlds. There is a great scene in the book when Pug is outraged and calls down natures elements on the people of the world. The book provides a perfect description of how much power Pug has. "Here stood a figure to awe, arms stretched upward, body trembling with rage, eyes seemingly aglow with strength."(351) After this display of power, Pug returns to his world and helps destroy the passage that goes between the two worlds.

Feist is an amazing auther. His use of words and the way he writes are simply amazing. I am very glad that my friend turned me on to this series and auther. I recommed this auther to anyone who loves good books.

Book Review: Great!
Summary: 5 Stars

I agree with the last review. This was better than Magician:Apprentice. It played around with what was right and what was wrong, and it didn't have slightly too much action like Apprentice.Tomas and Pug both end up doing what they know is right ,both pressured in different ways.
It made sense to me that Pug should go for Katala intstead of Carline.Carline wasn't amazingly nice to him.
The magic was at its best in this book.Pug used all different elements ,and his training was fascinating and different.Overall ,I loved it.
Pug has been a slave for several years in Kelewan. As soon as a Tsurani wizard finds that he has magic,Pug loses his memory ,and earns a new name:Milamber. He is trained for wizardry by the wizard that tooks his memory ,and told that his memory will return in his training. But also ,he must learn that he is not Tsurani(he has forgatten his heritage)and that the Tsurani's doings are wrong.
Meanwhile,Tomas ,the dwarves, and the elves, are desperatelly fighting against the Tsurani.Tomas soon realizes that the Sword of Ashen-Shugar that he bears is taking over him.He desperately struggles with the sword,as well as the Tsurani.
Feist fans must read this(after Magician:Apprentice.

Book Review: Thrilling second chapter in the Riftwar saga
Summary: 5 Stars

In Magician: Master, Raymond Feist continues the story begun in Apprentice. The so-called "Riftwar" continues, and we find both Pug and Tomas (the two main characters from Apprentice) drastically changed. Both gain great powers in this book, and both began to develop into powerful forces to be reckoned with.
The intrigue in this book lies in that the story is told in both worlds, and from both sides. Being a slave of the Tsurani, Pug learns their ways, and makes many friends among them. True to Feist's style, there are so many prominent characters that it's hard to keep track of them all, yet each character is well-developed.
This is definitely a page-turner, with the story taking so many curves that it is impossible to anticipate. This is far from your normal, run-of-the-mill fantasy, this is a truly enthralling story.
When I began reading this book, I became so involved in the story that I couldn't put it down, and finished the book in less than two days. This is a great fantasy novel, and a thrilling conclusion to Apprentice. The story, of course, continues for two more books, Silverthorn and Darkness at Sethanon, but the war effectively ends here. Feist is a very able storyteller, one that will keep you involved from cover to cover.

Book Review: One of Top Ten series I've read in over 15 years
Summary: 5 Stars

I just read this book for the fifth time. The second book in the Riftwar Saga could be the ending of the series but why would anyone not wish to continue to read about all the wonderful characters created by Raymond Feist. The story picks up with Pug as a slave in Kelewan who is soon discovered to have the ability to become a powerful magician. Thomas continues to grow into the powers of the Valheru. Prince Arutha's struggle against the Tsuranuanni encompasses a lot of this novel as well.

In deference to the negative reviews I must say that this is not a highly thought provoking book. However, it is a very fast paced enjoyable read. I have read hundreds of fantasy novels and this series is one that I have enjoyed more than most (Top Ten). I read novels in a series as some others read chapters, so it is a little hard to just review this book. I highly recommend any fantasy lover to read this series. There are also many novels that come after this series that are just as good (i.e. Serpentwar Saga).
One last note, don't listen to any of these reviews (including mine). If you enjoy fantasy, read it yourself and form your own opinion.
