Book Reviews of Magical Thinking: True Stories

Book Review: freakin' hilarious!
Summary: 5 Stars

i very much enjoyed running with scissors and dry by augusten burroughs, and this book was definitely no exception. whereas running with scissors was mostly a gross-out book and dry was a touching book, this one is a collection of hilarious essays by the author on his everyday life. some of the events in this book are so outrageous, if someone else wrote them i wouldn't believe them. but i trust this guy.

completely, totally outrageous and hilarious. i think the first two stories are re-used from "dry." but the rest is worth it, believe me!

at times this book can be annoying because the author acts so stereotypically gay, i have to think he must be TRYING to be that "gay." for instance he finds a mouse in his apartment and completely freaks out, or goes on and on about doing hair or decorating. sometimes you want to shout "stop being so gay!!!" also he gets into this whole thing where he's apparently trying to make himself look like the biggest jerk alive, on purpose.. he talks about how he hates his fans etc. to me this came across as rather exaggerated and fictitious.. he's probably a really nice guy in person, so there's no need to write like that.

Book Review: Augusten Burroughs rocks my world.
Summary: 5 Stars

"Magical Thinking" is the third Augusten Burroughs book that I've read, and I absolutely loved it. This isn't a complete memoir like "Running with Scissors" and "Dry." Instead, it's a collection of short stories about the author's life. All of these stories are incredibly honest, and also quite hysterical. My favorite chapters include a description of young Augusten's experience working on a television commercial for Tang; his stint as a student at the Barbizon School of Modeling; the twisted relationship he has with his corrupt housekeeper, Debby; his various sexual encounters with Catholic priests; and his relationship with his boyfriend Dennis, a.k.a. "The Schnauzer." I read this book very quickly and enjoyed every page. Augusten is an amazing writer, and I always find myself laughing out loud when I read his books. I highly recommend "Magical Thinking" to everyone.

Book Review: Not for the faint of heart, easily offended sensibilities, or those wholely committed to a toxic denial
Summary: 5 Stars

Has the core of modern humanity ever been so clearly delineated by any one author? I think not. Burroughs has done a beautiful job here. The mere existence of this book (to say nothing of it's place on the best seller lists,) restores my faith in our civilization, truly drives home the point missed (by me, anyway,) in all those mind numbing buddhist texts. We all ARE truly connected. From the universal dating truths and human foibles, such as those portrayed in "Beating Raoul," to the author being taken conversational hostage in the store parking lot by the perfect grandma in a Jackie O suit confessing to the author a horrific childhood replete with Dr. Pepper enemas...few books will stick with me as long as this. Like Beef Bourguignon for the soul. Thanks Augusten Burroughs.

Book Review: His Best Yet
Summary: 5 Stars

"Running with Scissors" was so horrifying, and "Dry" was so fraught with misery, that I was a bit scared to pick up "Magical Thinking." But this collection of essays is so darned funny. Burroughs makes no pretense of being warm and fuzzy -- in fact, he is blatant about his lack of compassion and his prejudices. But that's what makes his writing -- on topics as diverse as finding love in New York, log cabins, and killing wee beasties that sneak into his apartment -- so refreshing and hilarious. A must-read for fans of David Sedaris.

Book Review: Honestly Hilarious
Summary: 5 Stars

This is what good writing is all about. Flow, plot, intrigue! Everything is excellent in this book!

I LOVE LOVE the chapter about the little girl who kicks Augusten...had me laughing out loud, literally. I was appalled by the rat story and absolutely stuck to the book reading about the scamming housekeeper! I could not put this book down and I can't wait for the next Augusten Burroughs book!

5 stars, I completely recommend this book to everyone, reguardless of literary preference!
