Book Reviews of Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual

Book Review: Imagine- a computer manual that's a great read!
Summary: 5 Stars

Having enjoyed David Pogue's technology columns at the NY Times, I picked up this book to help me master Mac OS X Leopard operating system. It has been a real pleasure having David Pogue and his team guiding me through this extensive upgrade. He covers every conceivable topic with great clarity, all the while mixing in a delightful array of self depreciating jokes. Whether it is reviewing Leopard's 300 new features, learning how to make smart folders in finder or figuring out how to fax a document, or set up a home network Pogue guides you through the learning process with clear prose and a liberal dose of humor. I like this 900 page tome so much that I've started turning to random chapters just to see what I will stumble upon. Over the past week I've managed to become acquainted with various corners of the software I never would have encountered without David's encouraging and humorous approach to working with technology. I highly recommend this book for both beginners and more experienced users.

Book Review: An essential for Leopard users
Summary: 5 Stars

I received a new iMac for Christmas and bought David's book to act as a reference for Leopard. I'm not disappointed. First, I'm a fan of David's iTunes video podcast and especially enjoyed "iPhone, the Musical" and I'm a further fan of the "missing manual" series. I figured I could not go wrong. While Leopard is intuitive, there are some nuances that are best discovered through a book like this. In less than a week with my new iMac, David's book has helped me discover several interesting and important techniques for getting the most from Leopard. The book is well-written, has a detailed index and delivers a lot of bang for the buck. I am enjoying browsing through it and appreciate how quickly I can flip to the index to find a fast answer. I've not had a single question that could not be easily answered by this book in just a minute or two. For these reasons, I'm happy to give the book five stars.

Book Review: Mac OS X Leopard "The Missing Manual" should be included by Mac.
Summary: 5 Stars

A great book -- I can't imagine anything better -- and yes, it is missing from the OS X Leopard, but hey -- Apple only charged $129 for this product, while the book would add significantly (at least percentage wise) to this price, and many wouldn't need this book even if included. But it is necessary for a newbie like me.

And note that there are other "Missing Manuals" in this series supporting Mac products. For example I already have their iMovie '08 & iDVD manual, and also their iPhoto '08 - a separate manual all by itself. These are all by David Pogue, and are products of O'Reilly Media of Canada. Maybe there are more, and I'll look for them when I get a min. David Pogue BYW is the technology columnist for the New York Times, and an Emmy-winning CBS correspondent besides being the creator of the Missing Manual series.

Book Review: best manual for Leopard
Summary: 5 Stars

Computer manufacturers stay away from publishing manuals which you can hold in your hands. They prefer on-line instructions, FAQs, hints, etc. which are quite useful in most cases, but they cannot take a place of well written, comprehensive manuals. When you use on-line help, you are looking for one particular function or solution. Manuals give you the overall, larger pictures, and you learn things that you didn't realize existed. However, not all manuals are created equal. I've read (and own) several of them on Leopard; some are good, others are mediocre. But this manual by David Pogue just outclasses all others, in depth, in comprehensiveness, in organization, you name it. And his humor (more understated than "in your face") does make the book easy to read. If you were to pick one book on Leopard, this definitely should be the one!

Book Review: Everything You Need to Know about Leopard
Summary: 5 Stars

This is really a great book. I bought a few Apple Leopard books from Amazon and this is the best of the three. It has everything you need to know in a quick reference format. Lockups, booting to a command line, Grey Screen, How to's and everything to get you out of a jam etc... If you want to get one Leopard book you can use and get information quickly to solve a problem this is it. There is also a lot of great information that can be used to become a more proficient user or to enhance your computing experience (things you never thought of that are very useful). The book is actually very interesting and makes for good night time reading to get you fired up for tomorrow morning in front of the computer. Highest Recommendation - A++++
