Book Reviews of Lush Life: A Novel

Book Review: Lush Characters
Summary: 5 Stars

Price gives the reader details from the point of view of many characters and the suspense develops waiting for and watching them intersect. An incident, a mugging gone wrong, sets the stage. Basically a police drama a la Homicide. With witnesses, speculations, and accusations by the police. And characters twisting to do what they think they have to do.

What made this book so memorable for me was the characters with all their flaws. The detectives who follow their instincts even as the reader is sometimes horrified by them. And everyone else pulled in by the event. Price's writing unfolds slowly but steadily. It is translucent, making the conversations and thoughts and actions he relates seem like nonfiction. Price writes authentically with a sea of characters as varied as New York.

Book Review: Couldn't put it down
Summary: 5 Stars

Price's book is gripping from page 1 through the end. It can best be described as a literary thriller. Price's dialogue is among the best in current fiction. Each character has a distinct voice, at times funny, pathetic, harsh, or soothing. The book, although, ostensibly a murder mystery, is better regarded as a study in victimization. Price looks carefully at how broad the definition of victim is -- does it extend beyond the corpse on the street to the "survivor" who agonizes over the choices that are made in the moments following a crime? A rich tapestry, full of very real characters.

Book Review: Fantastic book, one of the best in the last couple of years
Summary: 5 Stars

Author Richard Price has really honed his storytelling in "Lush Life," the story of a police investigation of a murder in New York's Lower East Side. The language is tough, the atmospherics minimal, but Price provides enough detail for the reader to feel the drama in each scene. Especially artful are the scenes of police interrogation, however misdirected. This novel will be studied years from now for its perfect snapshot of the zeitgeist of the post-9/11, hipster era in New York. It's a perfect work of art that anticipates its criticism, and engulfs the small-minded.

Book Review: Made me an Avid Richard Price Fan!
Summary: 5 Stars

I rarely read books more than once, but having read this a few months ago, I recently picked it up again because I had run out of new books to read. I had planned on reading a few chapters until a fresh book arrived from Amazon. Well, my new books arrived, but I couldn't put Lush Life down and read it through til the end. Enjoyed reading it even more the second time around. Now, I've ordered several other Richard Price novels. Love his writing style and the wit of his characters.

Book Review: Another unforgettable picture of urban decay
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been a fan of Price's work since reading "Clockers" many a year back, and I've tried to keep a close eye on his output. To my lights, this is his best book in some time. I think it is more cohesive and satisfying than "Freedomland" which had flashes of brilliance but failed to deliver in the end. Reading this book really made me want to hang out on the Lower East Side, crime, filth and all. There is so much character in the city and no one captures it as well as Price.
