Book Reviews of the Lush Life: A NovelCustomer Review: a colorful characterization of life in the underbelly Summary: 4 StarsRichard Price brings this lower east side world alive with carefully created characters, using language in a most instinctive way.He is a master of characterization, bringing What this book captures most clearly is how a high-profile homicide in Manhattan's Lower East Side affects a chain of people from the victims family, and intimates. He illustrates how corruption feeds the medias parastic needs. The book also reveals the corruption and politics of the inner city network, and how crime exists on various levels within the system, narrowly separated by titles.
This book will please crime drama readers, and those that relate to modern city themes.Another reviewer reminded me that life in this myriad of conflict and social decay has basically remained the same through the ages.It is true that the world of Dickens could be compared to the world Price paints.
I was drawn to the book by the main character Eric Cash and his contemporary dilemma of being lost in the exploitations of city dreams. As an artist I can relate to his dilemma of the aging romantic in the context of the dirty world of survival on the lower east side of Manhattan.
